To demand they talk quietly?

So every 3-4 weeks my Mum and Stepdad come and stay with me DP, and DSs. They stay 2-4 days usually and it's great apart from one thing. When DM and I go to bed, say 10 my DP and DSD stay up chatting (and drinking) until the wee small hours. My bedroom is directly above the room they sit (people asleep everywhere else apart from kitchen so they can't go anywhere else) and I can hear their deep, booming voices through the ceiling so I can't sleep.

I can cope with this usually but currently very heavily pregnant, really struggling to sleep and generally feeling shit and all I want is the best nights sleep I can get. I've just gone to bed super early, asking them to please keep their voices down but lo and behold I can hear them as though I was with them. I can't hear DM though and she's bound to be talking so either it's the register of their voices or she's being quieter. They just kind of sneered at me when I asked them to be quiet so I don't think they were taking me seriously. I don't think they're trying to be quieter. I'm almost in tears I'm so tired and I can't bear the thought of being awake until they decide to retire.

AIBU to go down there and demand they be quieter? I'm worried I'm just going to make a nob of myself as I'm clearly somewhat emotional. I just need to go to sleep!

Sounds like maybe they would be better visiting you a lot less!!
Visitor overload must be a real 'thing'!!

PositivelyPERF · 16/03/2018 21:26

That’s just fucking selfish of them. Are they usually so dismissive of your feelings? Text your mum and ask if she could come up to chat to you, then tell her how tired you are and can she please help.

I don’t hesitate to tell my boys’ friends to stick a sock in it when they’re downstairs and they’re all midvto late 20s

honeysucklejasmine · 16/03/2018 21:26

They sneered at you?! Time for them (and your dp) to gtfo.

Idontdowindows · 16/03/2018 21:31

Right, time for them to fuck off.

Peanutnutterbutter · 16/03/2018 21:34

Sneered probably wasn't the right word. They ignored me basically. They think I'm overreacting, it's not a big deal, they're only here for 2 days. Unfortunately my Mum thinks SD and my partner (and men in general) should be able to do whatever they want and be waited on hand and foot so she won't be any help.

I'm going to go and have chat with them now, I doubt it will make any difference but I do feel better that people don't think I'm overreacting. I was wondering if it was just tiredness and hormones.

You would be unreasonable not to. Or at least you shouldn't have to suffer in silence. They ought to be more considerate. I hope they quieten down when you ask Flowers maybe your mum could appeal to them if they ignore you. Not that they have any excuse to do so, but the sneering implied that they don't particularly take your comfort seriously.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 16/03/2018 21:35

Ah cross-posted. Your mum will be no help then!

Peanutnutterbutter · 16/03/2018 21:36

I am grateful for their support, coming a long distance to see us and 3 DSs (soon to be 4!) and help with them regularly. I don't want to fall out with them. Everything else is fine, they're great in many many ways.

What selfish fuckers!

You're heavily pregnant, so your needs trumps theirs a million times over. Time to stamp down the stairs and read them the riot act.

If you don't do it now, you'll have to do it when the baby is here, so better to get your point across to them sooner rather than later.

Peanutnutterbutter · 16/03/2018 21:38

I asked them! I was fairly assertive and i didn't cry. I can still hear them but it's marginally quieter. I've also found some ear plugs!

Thanks for giving me a kick up the arse. I'm going to try and go to sleep now. Fingers crossed for a good night without too many trips for a wee!

They Are being terribly inconsiderate and selfish !!!

Don't ever ever ever be afraid to tell people exactly what you need from them, especially when pregnant/in labour/with small baby. People should treat you like a queen at this stage

littlemisscomper · 16/03/2018 21:53

I was going to suggest earplugs. Or kicking them out to go to the pub. But they should be respectful of you, especially with you being pregnant and exhausted.
