To think that a bit more might have been made of DD getting her Baden Powell award at guides

DD(13) has been working on her Baden Powell award for months. She has got loads of badges, been on a special camp and produced a beautiful scrapbook with all her work in.
She finished last October and I've had to keep reminding her guider to contact the district commissioner because nothing was happening. Then there was weeks waiting for a badge and certificate to be ordered and signed. Finally, I got a text from dd whilst she was at guides last week to say she was getting the award that night. Dh and I rushed to the meeting where the girls were gathered at the end of the meeting and dd was just handed her certificate and badge with little more than a well done. Totally underwhelming. I got my award in the 80s and I remember it being a lovely little event. I understand that the guiders are all volunteers, and I have been a guider myself in the past. I just can't help feeling sorry for dd after all the work she has put in.

Dd is 20 and still to get hers it was being chased up apparently Hmm It is such an anticlimax this badge used to be a big deal late mil was a guider and she used to put on a little do when her guides were getting theirs

JamPasty · 16/03/2018 15:38

That is pretty crap. Tell her congratulations though, it's a big deal to earn the BP trefoil!!

bluebellation · 16/03/2018 15:39

Oh that's miserable. When DD got hers the local press came and the guider had made a scrapbook of photos from various camps and events DD had been involved in. Very well done to your DD, it's no easy achievement!

I still have the photos of the party that was held when my friend and I got our Queen's Guide (the precursor to the BP award) - the whole district came as 2 other girls from other companies got theirs as well - a huge fuss was made.

A real pity - it was a very big achievement for your daughter to get it and it would have been nicer if a bit of a fuss was made to recognise this.

Please give your dd many congratulations and a left handed handshake from me!

What a shame, I'm a Cub Leader so no working knowledge of the BP award but I'd assume it's like the Chief Scout Awards in Scouting. We have an awards ceremony, in our District, for each section with the Explorers who gain the highest one being given them at the District AGM. It's a big thing to recognise the amount of effort put in. They are given their actual badges, to see on, during a normal group meeting so hopefully there may still be another award ceremony due your DD.

There was fuss made when I got mine. I remember being utterly gutted after the years of work that went into it. And this was 20 years ago now!

Ubercornsdiscoball · 16/03/2018 15:50

No fuss made that should have said!

redexpat · 16/03/2018 15:53

Well done DD! I know leaders are usually defended by the phrase but theyre volunteers! but that is rubbish of them. She deserved more. Can you take her out for dinner and make a fuss?

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 16/03/2018 15:56

Wow that's a bit rubbish.

Awards in our scout groups are always a big thing.

Give your dd a big congratulations and a well done from me.

Fletchasaurus · 16/03/2018 15:57

As a guiding leader, I can assure you we always make a fuss of the girls, they deserve it after working so hard! Hopefully you can do something nice together!

Dontoutmenow · 16/03/2018 16:08

I got mine and they spelled my name incorrectly on the certificate!

ScottishG · 16/03/2018 16:11

Thanks for all the nice comments. I wondered if I was being a bit precious. I got my BP in 1986. One of the very first after it replaced Queens Guide. I had an award evening, a cake, photos etc and felt I'd achieved something a bit special. There have been a couple of changes of leader recently which hasn't helped. I like the idea of taking dd out for our own little celebration. I think I will make a cake too.

Well done to your daughter, that's something to be really proud of! Def take her out for a family celebration. It is a big deal in my books and takes a huge amount of work!

I got mine back in the 80s and in another country. All the girls who had been awarded their badge in a 12 month period went to a special ceremony and their badges were presented by the state commissioner for Guiding and it was super important with photos in the newspaper and an event programme etc.
