to ask if your nails are like this?!

Just tried to cut my toenails. Bloody hell, it's like trying to slice plastic with a butter knife. They're so thick and friable, particularly the little ones, I actually thought the scissors were going to break.
My daughter's nails are thin and easily chopped! As mine used to be! Does this thickening and hardening process keep going with aging? Ffs, I am only thirty. I'll need an industrial saw by the time I'm sixty.
Anyone have any solutions?!

That industrial saw comment made me giggle!! I’ve no advice though sorry. Maybe try filing down or going to chemist?

Clandestino · 16/03/2018 09:45

No personal advice but I found something for you:

Cut your toenails after a bath.

JeSaisPas · 16/03/2018 09:51

Mine are thick too! I cut them after a bath or shower and they're so much better.

TotHappy · 16/03/2018 09:56

Grin pliers!

Mine are the same. Its so difficult to cut mine

SleepFreeZone · 16/03/2018 09:59

It is an ageing thing I’m afraid. I use sharp nail scissors and I don’t have any problem

FranticallyPeaceful · 16/03/2018 10:00

My big toe has always been like that, ever since I was a child they were thicker than the rest. The rest are okay

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 16/03/2018 10:04

It's an aging thing. Have a look for podiatry scissors, not just "nail" scissors. I bought these on amazon to do my elderly grandfathers nails and they were great. Ordinary nail scissors had no chance!!

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 16/03/2018 10:06

Not suggesting you're elderly by the way, I'm older than you! 😂Blush

Springiscoming123 · 16/03/2018 10:09

same here,i have found once or twice a week put a decent moisturiser on the toes and wear a pair of socks for a few hrs

it has made a differrence

JennyBlueWren · 16/03/2018 10:18

Strangely the only scissors I can use to cut my toenails are the really strong ones on my pen knife! DH has the opposite problem with nails that pretty much flake away.

What were my ancestors doing that required them to have strong toe nails?

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 16/03/2018 10:22

I was once clipping my toenails and minding my own business when DH walked into the bathroom as my big toenail shot off from the clippers and hit him in the eye. I heard the 'ting' sound as it bounced off his eyeball.

He had to sit for 8 hours in A&E having drops in his eye because it had scratched his retina. He now wears protective squash goggles whenever I clip my cloven hooves.

lborgia · 16/03/2018 10:26

Isn’t it a sign of a nail infection? That’s what we’ve been told here in Oz.I really hope so, because DH had to take 3 months of antibiotics to deal with it!
Maybe don’t click on this if you’re eating... icky info

TotHappy · 17/03/2018 16:27

Aaah, I'd never heard that! I hope its just the ageing! Thanks for all the tips everyone

Sadly an ageing process. My podiatrist advises that regular filing with nail file keeps them down without needing to go through the trauma of cutting. I use the stick files that you see in nail salons and file weekly. Works very well.

Roussette · 17/03/2018 16:59

Tot hate to say it but I am twice your age (literally) and mine are dead easy to cut!
