....for a 10-year-old girl, on the cusp of puberty and dealing with all the complex, horrible, and wonderful things that it entails?

I'm looking for a book (or several?) to snuggle up and read with my daughter, that will help her to navigate the path ahead and possibly give us opportunities to chat about it easily, with mutually intelligible language.

I had in mind some massive book that deals with EVERYTHING Grin : age-appropriate sex.ed., how to manage feelings that sometimes overwhelm (shyness, jealousy, insecurity etc.), how to deal with bullies, how to develop her self-esteem. The series I've linked to below looks really good but (a) there are a few of them and I'm not sure where to start, and (b) the idea of it being packed with Americanisms isn't as helpful to me as it would be if it was set in and referred to her daily experience in the UK

Has anyone read these and found them useful? (or awful?!) Can anyone recommend anything better? Obviously, I do talk to her generally but I felt that having a physical book to read together might be really fun and eye-opening in this context. Smile

Judy Bloome - Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret; and others. Not "Forever" which is about sex.

Ah...a novel...good idea Smile . I was thinking more of a kind of reference-y thing BUt a novel is a great idea too. I've read both of those and like them.

I have the book for both sexes, it is very good, clear and easy to digest. Not too heavy etc

In the end, based on Amazon reviews, I went with these 3 for now:

  1. this rather awfully titled one

(I honestly think "What the ACTUAL FUCK is happening to me?" would have been better Hmm )

  1. this one

  2. seems like an awful lot of pink going on here but here's hoping they're OK

Reviews were good for all of 'em. I'll let you know!

We have the first one.
It's pretty good although I think there are a few bits that are Hmm. But a great starting point for opening up discussion.

This is a useful website for ‘issue’ and inspiring books for girls: www.amightygirl.com

American so obviously focusing on American role models and authors, but still worth a look!
