DM passport dilemma for surprise holiday

Angrybittertwisted · 15/03/2018 15:20

Hi all,
Not really AIBU but need to book holiday ASAP as I’ve been looking at it the past few days and don’t want the cookies to put the price up. But it’s a surprise for my DM who I’ll tell on Christmas this year (going Jan 2019) I need her passport to book it but I can’t find it anywhere.

What excuse can I say to ask for her passport?

Use private browsing for the cookies.

I wouldn't book a surprise holiday unless I was VERY sure the person would like it.

bella2bella · 15/03/2018 15:23

Can you tell her you're taking her somewhere not as good as where you actually are taking her? Or pay for the quicker service (or is that only for renewals?)

bella2bella · 15/03/2018 15:24

Or sorry, misread, thought you needed to get her to get one! I'd love a surprise holiday!

GlitterRollerSkate · 15/03/2018 15:26

Take a day trip to France with her then tell her you'll need her passport to book it?

Angrybittertwisted · 15/03/2018 15:27

@ItsuAddict Hmm my DM is definitely not going to complain about a surprise holiday to New York

OP posts:
Redtartanshoes · 15/03/2018 15:27

Yell her you need it for your work, some new security clearance

LemonBreeland · 15/03/2018 15:28

Tell her you can't find your passport and need to get a new one, so you will need her passport for the passport number and expiry details.

TroubledLichen · 15/03/2018 15:31

Errr when I applied for DD’s first British passport I had to provide DM’s passport details along with mine as DH isn’t British. Any chance you could say you need it for something like this? Even if your DH is British you could say he’s lost his passport and can’t provide his details or that it’s a new requirement to provide grandparent’s details or something...

MrsJayy · 15/03/2018 15:31

Can you go fly somewhere like Dublin or as a pp suggested france where she needs it for ID faff about with passports at check in take it for safe keeping and then book it ? I would love a surprise holiday ☺

Grimbles · 15/03/2018 15:31

Why do you need her passport to book?

MrsJayy · 15/03/2018 15:33

Passport ID is asked for when booking flights/ holidays now

halfwitpicker · 15/03/2018 15:33

Yeah Op, people hate surprise trips to NYC! Can I come too???? I've even got a passport already!

Grimbles · 15/03/2018 15:34

I've just booked 2 trips and not needed to give passport details at the time of booking.

MrsJayy · 15/03/2018 15:34

Yeah My passport is easy to find I would love to come

halfwitpicker · 15/03/2018 15:35

Do you have kids?

If so you could make up a fictitious project that your kids are working on at school and you need a photocopy of it... Say you can't find yours and the project is due Monday...

CotswoldStrife · 15/03/2018 15:35

You'll need a visa or waiver as well if you and your DM don't have one already, so bear that in mind if you're not going to tell your DM about the trip until very close to departure time!

Best of luck sorting it out, OP.

Brummiegirl15 · 15/03/2018 15:37

I'm travelling to the US in May and didn't have to give details at time of booking. Yes I need to complete it before we fly, plus you obviously need it for the ESTA, but if it's Christmas time and you are going in January, its fine.

FloydOnThePull · 15/03/2018 15:41

YABU to book a surprise holiday for anyone. 😂😂😂

Yeah, shame on you OP, go and have a long hard look at yourself before inflicting such terrible misery on your DM.

Can you tell her you're renewing your passport? I seem to remember if you have lost yours and need a new one part of the form asks for your parents passport details (or even if it doesn't you could tell a porky and say that it does)

Angrybittertwisted · 15/03/2018 15:44

Thanks everyone!

We’d definjtely be eligible for the visa waiver from what I’ve just googled. I’ll have to have a look into how we can get that. The visa things are very confusing

OP posts:
CotswoldStrife · 15/03/2018 15:45

I think she'd have to apply for her own visa so I'm not sure there is a way round that tbh.

usualGubbins · 15/03/2018 15:46

Visa is easy, just look up ESTA and make sure that you don’t get some cowboy charging over the odds!

KatharinaRosalie · 15/03/2018 15:49

You need Esta. Use this link.
esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/
There are tons of websites that look official but actually charge you an extra fee. US $14 is all you should pay.

TroubledLichen · 15/03/2018 15:52

Just google ESTA, it should be the first result and make sure the website address is .gov and it costs $14 per person.

You can do hers if you have all the required information, you’ll need the passport and the other stuff will likely be stuff you know as she’s your Mum- I’ve done many for my bosses when I worked as a PA.

ClareB83 · 15/03/2018 15:52

You can definitely get the ESTA for her as well. I always sort them for the whole family.
