To be so intolerant to this

Okay so firstly, I do not think I abu. However, I am angry and need a rant!
So I was outside a shop with my dog and he started to bark. An older man stopped, smirked at me and said ‘I thought that was you making all that noise’.
I gave him the withering go-fuck-yourself look and he then said ‘oh cheer up love’ Angry
Wtaf is wrong with people?! Rant over

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 15/03/2018 12:39

I mean how the fuck are you meant to answer that?!
I’m with you, it’s very annoying.

toffee1000 · 15/03/2018 12:39

Why the hell would he think you were barking? “Cheer up love” is such an irritating comment, yes. Not funny in any way.

Trinity66 · 15/03/2018 12:42

very annoying

mimibunz · 15/03/2018 12:45

Don't you love it when someone insults you and then tells you to cheer up? Grrr.....'No, love, how 'bout you fuck off?'

Trinity66 · 15/03/2018 12:47

Like was he calling you a dog and then telling you to cheer up because you didn't think that was funny or what? Hmm

cuttingcarbonemissions · 15/03/2018 12:52

It is annoying BUT remember many elderly people suffer from dementia and make comments without thinking or because they think they are funny.
My father used to do this all the time - commenting on weight, dress, type of car etc to family and strangers alike. I found it excruciatingly embarrassing and worried that someone would one day hit him or verbally abuse him in response. He told me I lacked a sense of humour ( as well as being fat, ugly and hairy).

Not sure there is much you can do except ignore and be glad you are not them.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 15/03/2018 12:55

Could have been worse... I'd have probably told you to shut your stupid fucking dog up.

(Only half joking - I have PMT and a splitting headache. My tolerance level to everything is at an all time low.)

OutyMcOutface · 15/03/2018 12:57

That’s just weird. I don’t think I would have been able to get over the weirdness to get to the go fuck yourself point.

JaneJeffer · 15/03/2018 12:59

It was a joke!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 15/03/2018 12:59

Really? Couldn't be arsed getting worked up over that OP. Bit of a stupid thing to say obviously but come on, not worth getting so cross about!

Grumblepants · 15/03/2018 13:03

Some people think their stupid comments are hilarious, when really you just want to punch them in the face (light hearted before I get slated for being abusive).
I was in the shop today trying to get past the counter with a pushchair and shopping hanging off it. Old man was in the way so I asked if I could please squeeze past. He didn't hear me so I repeated itv3 times. In the end a lady moved so I could back up and go long way round so I didn't knock anyone. At the point old man looks at me then looks back to cashier and say "blinking women drivers ha ha ha". I was unreasonably livid, glared at him and muttered "hilarious" while stripping off. It was a stupid thing but for some reason made my blood boil!
Thank you for letting me rant too on your post.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 15/03/2018 13:06

Unreasonably livid Grumble? Over that? Sheesh.

What's up with people these days. Fuming and livid over stuff that barely warrants an eye roll!

purplelass · 15/03/2018 13:10

You might have been the only contact he'd had with anyone all day, and he didn't really say anything nasty, just trying to have a joke.

I really couldn't get ranty over that - don't sweat the small stuff and all that...

whiskyowl · 15/03/2018 13:16

Would he say the same thing to a man?

I highly doubt it.

The belittling association of women and bitches is patronising.

Aprilmightmemynewname · 15/03/2018 13:17

You should have told him you were feeling ruff!
And bit his leg Grin

itsjess · 15/03/2018 13:19

It’s more the ease with which people (predominantly men) think it’s acceptable to make comments, rather than the actual comment that made me angry.
Everyday there’s at least one and it’s grating. When I’m out with DH people manage to control themselves.
I’m over it now - pregnant and hungry and been awake since 4am so my tolerance is at an all time low. Ive had lunch and now love all the people...
Milk - Sympathies with the headache
Purple - then how about just say hello? I will happily chat to people.

April - next time Grin

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 15/03/2018 13:32

I think he was just trying to be funny.

Admittedly I wouldn't find it funny either, but I think the withering go-fuck-yourself look was equally uncalled for as his comment tbh. Blanking him would have been sufficient.

purplelass · 15/03/2018 13:32

Purple - then how about just say hello? I will happily chat to people

To be fair, how was he supposed to know that? A joke is an ice breaker, whether you find it funny or not is up to you.

I'd find it odd if a complete stranger came up to me and said hello but any attempt at humour / comment on the weather would make me feel more comfortable I think.

lovesugarfreejelly63 · 15/03/2018 13:38

Grumble, it could be the elderly gentleman who was causing an obstruction was deaf, many elderly people are, therefore did not hear you, but his comment was unnecessary, best ignored.

eddiemairswife · 15/03/2018 13:39

You need to develop a sense of humour.

Ohyesiam · 15/03/2018 13:42

I think he was trying to make a joke? He needs to stop because he’s shit at it.
Being told to cheer up makes me feel stabby. And rightly so.

SpringNowPlease2018 · 15/03/2018 14:09

Tawdry "I think he was just trying to be funny"

I think he is the guy who uses every chance he can get to call a woman a bitch.

Sorry this happened to you OP.

laddylonglocks · 15/03/2018 14:19

Rude git.. basically calling you a dog. You say you get these most days!? What kind of comments?

AngelsSins · 15/03/2018 14:20

To the people who think this was a joke, can you explain how calling a woman you don't know, a dog, is funny? Clearly my sense of humour must not be great, because I just see it as rude.
