Use of female imagery on branding

MrsExpo · 14/03/2018 20:34

Ok, I admit I may be feeling a bit over sensitive at the moment for various reasons, but AIBU to think that the use of female imagery on a brand of chocolate confectionary called "Rich and Intense Bakewell Tart Milk Chocolate" is a bit out of order. Didn't know whether to laugh or cringe when I saw it. This was in a National Trust shop, btw. Erm...?

FlibbertyGiblets · 14/03/2018 23:11

Oh. I am really thick. Yes I see. Tart. Back of the class for me.

DalekDalekDalek · 14/03/2018 23:15

I think anyone who assumes that using a picture of a female is connected to the word "tart" needs to get a grip. Talk about over sensitive!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 14/03/2018 23:18

Yeah i see what you mean mrs

Funny when the words and picture gives you a jolt Smile

Arealhumanbeing · 14/03/2018 23:28

@ShiftyMcGifty

No irony.

A simple message to the OP. I wasn’t seeking to engage with you or debate the very clear issue here. Just didn’t want OP to waste time.

As you were. Continue to enjoy pretending that you don’t understand.

Grilledaubergines · 14/03/2018 23:29

This made me laugh, OP. Excellent effort.

Thank goodness women don’t eat apple TART, Lemon TART, Bakewell TART. Whatever would the neighbours say?

MargotLovedTom1 · 14/03/2018 23:32

She's hardly your stereotypical 'tart' though, if that is the alleged offensive link?!? Confused

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/03/2018 23:42

Honestly if I'd have thought about that for hours I'd not have got any connection to tart at all. The ginger chocolate bar has a picture of a sheep. What's the connection there?

This is from the description on the website about the cherry chocolate:

"Not just a tasty fruit, cherries also have a long cultural history, used variously as a symbol in both art and poetry.
The cherries in the hidden image feature on an unusual textile trade label from the cotton-spinning Quarry Bank Mill, Cheshire. By buying this chocolate you’re helping reveal treasures like this to everybody."
Which part of that means that the woman is meant to be a tart?

Teutonic · 14/03/2018 23:52

Arealhumanbeing. There is nothing obtuse at all.
There is a woman's face on a bar of chocolate, what the name of the chocolate is is irrelevant.
Someone had better warn Mrs Beeton and Mary Berry about their connection to tarts. Quick. 😱

TIRFandProud · 15/03/2018 01:25

@Arealhumanbeing

Yes, if you don't get the answer you want then keep asking different people.

If you can't find outrage and people being all offended about nothing in particular then head to the feminism boards.

Hmm
Scrumplestiltskin · 15/03/2018 04:09

Is it that the picture looks torn away from the nose down, and is thus mouthless and carries an implication that women should be silent? 🤔
I think that's a wee bit of a stretch if that's the case. But I can't think what else it could be!

JacksGirl123 · 15/03/2018 05:33

Yes head to the feminism boards. They'll tell you that half a vintage painting of a woman on a Bakewell tart chocolate bar means they're implying she's a tart. Or not.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 15/03/2018 05:39

Wow. Yet another person just looking to be offended over absolutely nothing.

Skarossinkplunger · 15/03/2018 05:55

I think the picture of the woman is meant to portray the “tart” element of the chocolate . But you all know that.

I really didn’t.

Mrsbird311 · 15/03/2018 07:25

That is brilliant 😂😂😂
Seriously though I now really want a bar, it sounds flippin delicious!!

Ifailed · 15/03/2018 07:32

You could be offended by the Tart reference, or you could also remember that a bakewell tart is topped with a cherry, like the ones being held by the women in the picture.

However, on balance, I do think there was some juvenile sniggering going on when they came up with this image.

SilverySurfer · 15/03/2018 08:58

Utterly bonkers but nothing surprises me on MN any more. It must be exhausting dredging the depths of the internet to find something, no matter how obscure and invisible to the majority, to be offended about. Yesterday it was a girl's top with Smile on it, today an innocent chocolate bar.

FlouncyDoves · 15/03/2018 09:01

OP, put down your phone and get out more. Hmm

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/03/2018 09:04

OMG! That has given me such a laugh!

I think the picture of the woman is meant to portray the “tart” element of the chocolate . But you all know that. No, we don't. Because, whilst being an active feminist I am not paranoid - and I read the blurb!

You do know that by insisting on such twaddle you are undermining real feminist issues, don't you? Because 'we' all do!

nikkylou · 15/03/2018 09:06

Surely someone thought "ah this picture has cherries, it will fit on Bakewell tart flavoured chocolate" as opposed to "this picture will fit as it's for Bakewell tart flavoured chocolate and all women are tarts and I must imply this by putting a picture of a woman in a compromising position with cherries"

Same with the sheep, they clearly must be implying that sheep are firey characters like ginger as opposed today fuck nothing else fits...this sheep'll do.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/03/2018 09:07

However, on balance, I do think there was some juvenile sniggering going on when they came up with this image. Having read the blurb I assumed that more sales means that the covered up part will be reduced, until the whole "unusual textile trade label from the cotton-spinning Quarry Bank Mill, Cheshire" is revealed.

OMG They will be revealing a woman BASTARDS!!! How could I not see this??!!

Pshaw!

PositivelyPERF · 15/03/2018 09:12

Head to the Feminist boards! How very dare you! I’m a dyed in the wool feminist and I think the OP is being ridiculous. I’m also rather depressed that the woman should be assumed to be portraying a ‘tart’, just because of the item she’s advertising.

MonsteraDeliciosa · 15/03/2018 09:15

People find "offence" and inappropriateness everywhere they look these days.
Beyond ridiculous.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 15/03/2018 09:18

Oh ffs, more bs from the terminally offended.

TerranceandPhilip · 15/03/2018 09:21

If you can't find outrage and people being all offended about nothing in particular then head to the feminism boards

The most accurate statement I've read on mumsnet in ages. Link it in some way to trans and you'll have a winner.

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 15/03/2018 09:22

Before we start sheep shaming...

Back in the fourteenth century, a pound of ginger cost as much as a whole sheep. The photo reveals a Herdwick sheep at Allan Bank, once home to the poet William Wordsworth. See more at Grasmere, Cumbria, a fascinating property your purchase will help look after.

If it was a more subliminal message then they'd have put a horse on the wrapper for the ginger I think.....
