Worried about ds - non blanching rash in an otherwise healthy 12yo?

Not an AIBU sorry, but posting for traffic.

We have already been to the doctors.

Ds (12) has developed a weird non-blanching rash all over his back, like tiny pinprick marks. He feels fine, no temperature etc, it’s just this rash.

Been to the gp and he’s puzzled. Doesn’t think it’s meningitis but been told to keep an eye on him and A&E if any other symptoms occur or rash gets worse tonight. We’re booked in for blood tests at 8am tomorrow morning but I’m not really sure what they’re looking for. Doctor said not to google as it’ll tell me all sorts of scary things, but of course I did - largely as he was so vague - and there’s all kinds of things from vitamin k deficiency to leukaemia, so I’ve stepped away from dr google now!

Anyway, I’m obviously worrying and just wondered if anyone else has experienced this and can offer some reassurance?

DS gets those. It's a viral rash for him. He doesn't usually even seen slightly unwell.
I now ignore it unless he is clearly I'll.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I asked the doctor if it could be a virus and he hoped not else they’d be overwhelmed with people panicking, which wasn’t exactly helpful!

Sounds like it could be viral. Slapped cheek perhaps.

Is it on the buttocks too?

Pompatrol · 14/03/2018 18:52

HSP?

JustBeingJobless · 14/03/2018 19:04

No it’s no more upper back and across the shoulders. Nowhere else, although, much to his disgust, I’m making him strip off regularly so I can check him over.

What’s HSP?

Heinrich schonlein Purpura or similar... caused us a scare. It's the meningitis rash but on legs and buttocks. Small risk of complications.

DS gets that rash from over exertion and heat. So a temperature and vomiting violently. He's had to stints in hospital just in case. His was mainly on neck shoulders upper arms.

HSP is an autoimmune condition - my son gets it. Its usually on the bottom half of the body but can be all over. It sounds scarier than it is - immune system overreacts and attacks skin cells hence the rash. If they suspect HSP the doctors will be checking your son's kidney function. Sometimes the body can go on to attack the kidneys. Drs are a bit confused about the protocol around HSP - once a person has had an attack they are more susceptible to future attacks. My son's pediatriation suggested he have weekly urine tests for 6 months after he was diagnosed to monitor his kidney function. HSP can also cause painful joints sometimes.

DD1 had a non blanching rash on her legs as a small baby (6 or 7 months), and she was otherwise well.

We went to OOH who sent us to A and E.

A and E tried to get a urine sample but DD wasn't obliging, so they took bloods as a precaution and sent us home, the doctor said that he bet that it would all be clear because if it was anything serious she'd be ill with it. And as he said, bloods came back clear and it was all put down to a mild virus such as a cold.

She hasn't had a non blanching rash since, but she does often get viral and heat rashes.
