in thinking dad is OTT...

This is a bit like Holly29's thread, but with my dad and with my new baby.
He is doing my head in. He is clearly very pleased to have a grandchild, and is really supportive - coming over immediately when I threw a wobbly, despite living over an hour away.
But... and here is the bit I feel guiltye cos he is also very helpful... his behaviour around my baby is doing my head in. CONSTANT overstimulation - blowing rasperries, clapping, singing, whistling, calling his name, shrieking, doing that AWFUL baby-speak voice- all to get my baby's attention. Even, at 1 point, IN TOWN!!!! I openly pretended not to know him when that happened. Even when I tell him to wind down so ds can chill a bit, he still sneaks one in...

It is getting to the point where I dont want to see him! He obviously loves my baby dearly but the way he expresses it is embarrassing me.

would you prefer he ignored the baby?i think your dc is very lucky yo have a fun grandad

TheArmadillo · 07/05/2007 16:04

Yes you are being unreasonable.

Get over it.

Rabster, i would give ANYTHING for my father to be "doing my head in" with my DD. He died when she was 6 weeks old having never seen her or even knowing she was on her way. He had alzheimers and died from lung cancer. He would have been exactly the same, he would have driven us nuts but i think i could put up with that, given the chance . I do see where you are coming from, but personally, i think you should indulge him. As long as yoru baby isnt tired and irritable, make the most of it and enjoy the break - life is too short. I tried to tell my dad i was pregnant, sometimes he would smile, but he didnt really understand. My FIL has plenty of grand children already and lives far away so my dd will not be lucky enough to have the special grandad that your son has.

TheArmadillo · 07/05/2007 16:10

SOrry was a bit unsymapthetic.

Is this your first? And still quite a young baby?

You're probably still hormonal and this makes you worry/get annoyed unreasonably.

You will get over this and look back and laugh.

Appreciate the help he is giving you and try and relax.

armadillo - you are probably right.
I have PND, and this could easily be another symptom. That's why I need to know AIBU!

you are not being unreasonable rabster - its totally understandable as i had PND too, but try and grin and bear it. If your dad knows you have PND he will probably be tolerant if you have a FFS dad calm it!! type outburst Just be thankful he is there for you, he sounds like a lovely, if not a little OTT man.

burstingbug · 07/05/2007 16:21

My Dad does this, DS's are 2.2yrs and 8.5mths. He does it at home, in town and even over the phone!
It is annoying and embarrassing, but as others said, at least he's there and takes an interest. On the other hand, there is fil, who hardly ever sees the boys.

rowan1971 · 07/05/2007 16:24

rabster - sorry to hear about your PND, but wait until your baby is older - your dad will be a brilliant grand-dad to a toddler. My dad plays all day long with my boys - gets them completely hysterical and over-excited, but they love each other to bits. He's the one person I can leave them with if they're ill or upset, he can get them to go to sleep just by sitting in the rocking chair with them and giving them a hug, and he's always willing to take them off my hands for a few hours. Sounds as though your dad will be the same!

my in laws are like this with my dd's and always have been, they are nearly 3 and nearly 2 now and they absolutely adore their grandparents and their grandparents adore them, they have them to stay as well which gives dh and I a break.
It is hard when you have pnd, I had it after dd2 and used to get really annoyed if anyone did anything with dd or in the house that wasnt my way. It does pass though
