'No is a complete sentence'.

People are often stating that this is the best thing they've learnt from mumsnet. But AIBU to think that if somebody asks you for a favour, and you just say 'no' - then you sound like a bit of a weirdo? Has anybody actually just said 'no' and refused to elaborate? If so, how did it go? Grin

I usually use, 'No, that won't be possible,' on CFers. One thing I've learned with them is that you never say 'sorry' or make up an excuse. It just gives them a wedge to bully. 'No, that won't be possible.' 'Oh, I was really hoping you'd help.' 'It's unfortunate, but I can't.' 'Why not?' 'I really don't care to share that, we all have things we want to keep private. I'm sure you can respect that.'

Because CFs have rhino hides, don't give a fuck about anyone besides themselves so have to be treated accordingly.

If it's a nice person and I genuinely can't, I'll say why.

Whether you agree with issuing a solitary "no" or not in certain circumstances, it's definitely not a complete sentence.
It's a pro-sentence.

I said no to something recently (it was such a novelty for me I started a thread about it!) and didn't give a reason.

I had to sit on my hands to stop myself texting the person after to say if you really can't get anyone else I can come but I didn't and feel quite proud of myself. I'm hoping it gets easier though!

My CF avoidance strategy is putting the CF off before they have a chance to ask and/or suggesting options that don't involve me at all so I sound helpful without actually helping followed by a swift change of subject if they insist.
Still working on a strategy against the hardened cases who don't even ask Grin

Yep, the phrases suggested seem less cringeworthy to me. Think I'm just a people pleaser Blush
