To think there’s nothing exciting you can do with turnips

I bought a load of veg I don’t normally choose: cauliflower, swede and turnips. Now I have no idea what to do with the. except put them in a stew (well cheese sauce for the cauliflower probably). It doesn’t feel very inspiring though. Can anyone suggest anything a bit more interesting please? I’ve got a few hours at home today so I could even go a little bit ‘fine dining’ with it Grin

Peel and thinly slice turnips and cook in cream etc. as you would a potato gratin.
My family likes swede and carrot mashed together and seasoned with ground coriander.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/03/2018 11:09

Cuts into to eight pieces slow pan fry in butter so they caramelise. This works best with the small purple turnips.

miniaga · 12/03/2018 11:09

Oh I’ve got carrots, so that could work. No cream but would milk and butter do?

Turnips? Have you seen Blackadder? Grin

miniaga · 12/03/2018 11:10

So I suppose I could roast the turnips too then?

OP posts:
miniaga · 12/03/2018 11:11

Haha I have seen Blackadder but not for years, what’s the turnips reference?

Any idea for cauliflower?

Turnip chips not too bad, if you're low carbing.

carryondoctor · 12/03/2018 11:13

I would go out and get some potatoes

Slice them thinly

Smother them in garlic and cream and simmer for about 5 minutes

Put them in a bowl and resmother with garlic and cream

Transfer to a baking dish

Bake them until the cheese is all melty and browned

Oh and put the turnip and the swede in the bin where they belong, unless you have any friendly neighbourhood goats WinkGrin

Roast them. When I’m doubt with veg: roast it.

Roast cauliflower is really nice. It’s the best way to cook it by far. Roast swede and turnip are also good.

BunsforTea · 12/03/2018 11:14

Ha, I was just coming on to say Turnip Surprise, but I see elQuinto beat me to it! Grin

Cauliflower crust pizza is delicious - and everyone can choose their own toppings (I like blue cheese and roasted veg). Bbc good food website has a good recipe

Saisong · 12/03/2018 11:14

You need some Stwnsh Rwdan.

Swede & carrot (sometimes potato) mashed with butter, cream and ground black pepper - divine!

MojoMoon · 12/03/2018 11:14

Cauliflower "steak" is terribly trendy in hip vegan places. Slice thickly and chargrill, some sort of salsa to dress it.

Or carefully hollow it out and stuff it with spicy rice and bake - looks an impressive centre piece when you serve
I have screwed it up several times though, it's quite hard to actually do.

Saisong · 12/03/2018 11:16

Actually turnips diced small are good in veg soup.

Kochicoo · 12/03/2018 11:16

I've never tried it myself but wasn't there a cauliflower pizza base trend a few years ago? I seem to recall my friend trying it and saying it was actually quite nice.

Igneococcus · 12/03/2018 11:18

Ferment them pink turnips, it's supereasy and delicious.

carryondoctor · 12/03/2018 11:20

Oh - also if you're not veggie and don't normally eat those types of vegetables, be aware that cauliflower, turnips AND swedes can cause farts in some people. Lots of farts.

So be prepared or maybe don't eat all 3 at once!!

Roussette · 12/03/2018 11:22

I love mashed swede! You could add a bit of turnip. I mash it with black pepper, butter, a bit of cream and fried onions mixed in. Sounds weird but isn't. Just make sure you drain and steam the swede a lot as it holds water.

Grumpbum · 12/03/2018 11:26

@Saisong my boys call it smashed carrots and I agree the very best thing you can do with swede and carrot.
Turnips I would bin

MickHucknallspinkpancakes · 12/03/2018 11:26

@Saisong is that a North Wales name? In the south west we called it Potch when I was a nipper!

Turnips are now sliced and roasting (I kind of combined two suggestions there) and the bin is always an option afterwards Grin

Cauliflower cheese is an old favourite. Cauliflower curries really well, or you can blanch it for a couple of minutes then fry it with onion, garlic, ginger and curry spices.
Dipped in batter and deep fried.
Cauliflower and blue cheese soup.

Mashed swede and carrots- with lots of butter, pepper and a splash of milk.

I don't like turnips, but DH likes them roasted, or sautéed in butter.

pallisers · 12/03/2018 11:33

This is a great cauliflower recipe if you don't want to do a cauliflower cheese. I often have it for lunch - nothing else required.

I love turnip just mashed with lots of pepper and a dash of cream but this Delia Smith recipe is also lovely
