just wondering whether there is an option for sedation for colposcopy and further treatment?

I'm being referred and have received a leaflet. I'm a little concerned that you don't get sedation for a biopsy if that ends up happening? I've had this procedure in Ireland before and the consultant said he always offers sedation. England seems a little barbaric to be honest. Intrude into your nether regions, then cut a piece off if necessary all while you have a local bloody anaesthetic which sounds painful to start with?
I'll end up crying and that doesn't seem right?

Surely they can be more humane?

I can’t believe how harsh people are being on here. I had a colposcopy (with treatment) and it was tremendously painful and I found it very distressing.
Everyone’s experience is different.

NeverTwerkNaked · 20/03/2018 09:11

pipgirl what a ridiculous statement

lorelairoryemily · 20/03/2018 09:24

@JackOConnellisstarredup we don't have to pay for smear tests, colposcopy's, biopsy or further treatment in Ireland so pop off and line up your facts before replying like that

lorelairoryemily · 20/03/2018 09:26

@theWarOnPeace no she would not have to pay for it in Ireland.

Bratsandtwats · 20/03/2018 09:39

OP, your attitude sucks.

However, sedation is not analgesia. You can be sedated and still be in pain but feel too drowsy or unable to do anything about it.

annandale · 20/03/2018 09:42

Colposcopy - I thought local was fine personally but I would ring and ask about sedation.

Colonoscopy -routinely sedated on the NHS.

In general, ask early and you are more likely to get.

huffandapuff · 20/03/2018 09:46

I can understand anxiety about having to have a colposcopy but your offensive posts, slagging off anyone who won't do as you want has made me lose sympathy. Don't make rude, sweeping generalisations about other people/ groups and then expect sympathy yourself.

Amaried · 20/03/2018 12:29

There is a nine month wait at the moment for colonoscopies here in Ireland unless you have private health insurance . But maybe you do?

VanGoghsDog · 20/03/2018 12:43

Not really relevant Amaried, as she's not having a colonoscopy!

SleepFreeZone · 20/03/2018 12:47

I’ve had a couple and the only thing that was uncomfortable was the metal contraption they put inside you to open you up. Otherwise it was fine.

sunandmoonshine · 20/03/2018 13:00

@sullabylullaby

You are not being unreasonable to be worried, but you have a really horrible, snarky, snide attitude.

Makes it hard to feel any empathy towards you to be honest.

Sullabylullaby · 21/03/2018 18:12

sunandmoonshine Thank you for that wonderfully useful addition to the thread.

I had this a few years ago.
I had an injection in my hand which was a) to relax me and b) to relax my internal muscles.
Once the polyp was severed, I was asked to 'bear down' to expel it. I did so and it bounced around the room.
Oh, how we laughed - I was so out of it.
Might not be as difficult as you fear.
Best wishes

iLoveABiccy · 26/03/2018 11:14

All of these people saying that it's fine!

It's different for every person obviously.

I had mine done two weeks ago, and although the nurse was very gentle, I had the biopsy & LLETZ done in one go, not fun at all. I was sweating, anxious & fainted at the end. Had just the local ana - next time I would DEFINITELY get sedated.. Was exhausted afterwards as well with heavy bleeding, haven't felt fully back to norm until now. But I had to travel by plane the week after so I'm sure that contributed.

Definitely go to Ireland for the sedation if NHS won't provide it. X

Im in Scotland and had one about 8 years ago. I was given an epidural for it, was pregnant at the time though so not sure if that was why?
