AIBU to remove the CVV from my credit card?

Having had the temerity to have a weekend away in a European city , i now find my CC blocked due to a security trigger. I doubt it involves real fraud or loss of money . Its just down to software algorithms and rules in the system.

I have often thought though that one of the major routes to fraud could be prevented if everyone scrubbed the CVV off the back of their CC and made a separate note of it.

The question is, would the banks wear it or would it create a bigger problem?

I find it bizarre that someone can acquire CC details and just used them on line and order/buy stuff.

All it needs is for someone to have sight of your card on both sides. Easily done. But with the CVV scrubbed, it would surely help to block a lot of fraud?

Mine has worn away, but I remember it anyway, so can still use it.

This idea might work.

FifiVoldemortsChavvyCousin · 11/03/2018 16:10

That sounds like a clever idea.

RaspberryCheese · 11/03/2018 16:13

Im going to contact my bank and ask their view on it and whether it might cause issues. They seem to think i shouldnt leave England with my CC.

Did you tell them you were going before you went?

Fluffyears · 11/03/2018 16:15

Ah I have enough bloody codes and numbers to remember and three cards(2debits and a credit). Could you choose your own 3 digits? Make it something memorable.

Ontheboardwalk · 11/03/2018 16:16

What a bloody good idea.

The Banks tell us never to write down our PIN numbers but print the next most sensitive bit of info on our cards with our account numbers. Doesn’t make sense.

crunchymint · 11/03/2018 16:20

I hate how banks expect you to phone them if you dare o abroad for a few days.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 11/03/2018 16:22

My CC company tells me I don't need to tell them if I'm going abroad - each time I call them they play this on a recorded message. To be fair they've never stopped my card whilst I'm on holidays

DPotter · 11/03/2018 16:27

IME informing the bank before you go away makes no difference - payments still get stopped as 'unusual activity'. Looking at you Barclays - Paddington Bear stare..........

kaytee87 · 11/03/2018 16:27

Just phone your card issuer before you go abroad and let them know, then they won't think it's been stolen.

youwouldthink · 11/03/2018 16:29

Here you just pop a note on your online banking

BikeRunSki · 11/03/2018 16:30

I usually get directed to “verified by visa” when I make an online purchase, as well as the credit card details.

Lunde · 11/03/2018 16:31

I usually just log the days I will be abroad and the country on the online form

Birdsgottafly · 11/03/2018 16:31

I put mine as phone numbers in my phone. It saves getting my card when I've saved the details, but the CVV has to be put in.

I do the same with my PINs.

Its recommended by Martin Lewis that you use your CC when abroad for better exchange rates.

I think this would be a good idea and the option to not have contactless.

Freshprincess · 11/03/2018 16:34

I've always wondered about this. I seems like the opposite of good security. If my cc got stolen, someone could spend hundreds if not thousands on it before Id noticed it missing.

AbsolutelyCorking · 11/03/2018 16:36

But they don’t always need the CVV to make payments? If I pay on the phone via credit card they don’t usually ask for the cvv, just the long card number, name and expiry date — which is all on the front.

doraismissing · 11/03/2018 16:38

Went abroad, used cc & had no problems

Came back & tried to buy something online at JL. Card refused "unusual activity". Tbh it would be unusual activity if I hadn't bought something from JL that week.

SockMobster · 11/03/2018 16:42

Credit Cards are usually blocked if you use them abroad without informing the credit card company, same with debit cards - you should always call beforehand to have a note put on your file if you want to avoid issues in the future.

No point in removing the ccv number on the back as most payments don't require it (only online payments).

I got a Revolut card last year. Top it up as and when I need it. Have used it in several European countries and in Asia with no difficulties.
Would never use a credit card abroad again.

noted Absolutelycorking,,but retailers who take that risk are not doing all they can to guard against fraud . CNP (customer not present) is one of the biggest areas of fraud and retailers not taking precautions and then finding that a fraudulent purchase has been made can often loose out as Visa or mastercard will then make an auto chargeback and leave the retailer with the loss

Oh yes that card company that has a recorded message saying don't bother to tell us when you go abroad. Stopped our card on day 1 of holiday. Wouldn't resurrect it because we didn't have the fifty magic words and numbers they wanted. It happened on the same holiday that saw DS in hospital and a 1000Euro medical bill that we had to pay (the insurance company were as bad as the credit card and took months to pay up).
Lucky we had back up cards. And back up back up cards....

Oraiste · 11/03/2018 16:53

The only time my card was blocked was when I told them I was going away. Confused

SoupDragon · 11/03/2018 16:54

I have memorised not only the CVV but my full credit card number. I think I’ve done too much online shopping!

Removing it does make sense.

SoupDragon · 11/03/2018 16:55

My card has never been blocked abroad nd I’ve never told them I’m going.

SelenaValentina · 11/03/2018 16:58

I second LovingLola re Revolut. Many places won't take cc's in Germany, due to bank charges. Revolut solves that problem. Just brill.
