Trigger: sexual abuse - Paedophiles views once released?

I am just watching a documentary about sexual abuse in schools. Part of it has a clip where a paedophile, who has been released from prison having served their sentence, states "it was the child that instigated the actual intimacy... they were nearly 12... yes he gave consent... a 12 year old child is just a capable of giving consent as any other age".

AIBU to think this is a huge sign this man is still a huge risk to children and he should be back behind bars, regardless of whether or not he's committed further crimes?

Many of the people on this program plead guilty to lesser crimes, and only served half their time in prison - I feel like the vast majority of them haven't done "their time".

I think long term close supervision and appropriate restrictions are the better answer.

Bleurgh

I think or at least would hope red flags popped up for their probation officer.

It's funny how it's always someone else's fault. Not literally, but how people like this don't take ownership. The fact he feels he did no wrong goes against the whole point I thought of prison which was rehabilitation.

I also didn't realise that schools do not have report instances of sexual abuse, it's not mandatory, but a guideline instead.

Actually feel quite sick.

That's sickening to read.

Does anyone understand what causes pedophilia? How can we "treat" it otherwise?

TryptoFan · 11/03/2018 13:44

From what I've read, paedophiles/child molesters are very manipulative and shouldn't be trusted post-rehabilitation.

I want to say castrate them, but wonder of that's too inhumane.

WickedLazy · 11/03/2018 13:52

And is there not a chance that type of probation work (monitoring pedophiles), would be exactly the kind of job that would attract pedophiles? How well vetted are these jobs, because the potential for collusion is still immense. It has happened before, allegations against police, social workers, mp's right up to former prime ministers. Some people mocked the "but anyone could be a pedophile, it's not just strangers we must be wary around", attitude as paranoid "oooh bad men round every corner nonsense", but the facts are that they really could be anybody, even the most unlikely of people.

It wont make me popular, but I've sat in enough high level meetings with medical professionals to know the view is that paedophilia is a sexual preference, like any other sexual preference. The question is how you re-educate to make the paedophile understand his/her choices are not a societal norm and how to avoid acting on those impulses.

This case is used by NHS Trusts now as part of it's learning (Bradbury Case) www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-30273548 When asked what could have been done to prevent it happening, Bradbury replied 'nothing'.

Germany deals with the problem differently; it encourages paedophiles to come forward and actively engage in therapy and treatment to curb desires. I have no idea of its success rates (nor am I going to google)

thethoughtfox · 11/03/2018 16:33

Can you link to the documentary?

Forevertired19 · 11/03/2018 16:48

I think it's disgusting.
There's so many threats now and the justice system does nothing.
Jon venables anyone? After child pornography, a guide how to safely have sex with children etc.. Why was he allowed out in the fucking first place after what he did to James?
I give up with it to be honest. I have very little faith in the justice system. Its seems now they just have to 'find God' and be on good behaviour to be let out. They shouldn't be.
