To ask which shops are on the verge of failure

I'm so depressed with the uk high street. Specifically British companies. The likes of Arcadia group, new look (already on its way out), next, oasis , Debenhams etc etc

The clothes are just terrible quality and most stores and staff and just tired, uninspiring and lacking any kind of chicness.

The wave of European brands seem to be killing our home grown business with their beautiful stores and chic offerings.

Who do you think is on the way out?

Body shop, it's always empty even on the weekends! I get put off going in because the staff are too pushy. New look have way too many stores and not sure who their target age demographic is for and my local one never has a huge range of sizes. With new look and also Dorothy Perkins I get put off buying in the shop because they are always emailing discount codes for 10%-25% off so I feel ripped off buying in store and will wait for an email.

malificent7 · 11/03/2018 07:48

Jones the Bootmakers has closed due to unexpected circumstances in our town...apparently many others have followed suit.
Lovely shoes but sooo expensive.

Toomanytealights · 11/03/2018 07:49

God you can't get in the door at our Hollister,it's always heaving. Why would they fold?Confused

Personwithhorse · 11/03/2018 07:49

There are simply too many shops selling cheap stuff. Perhaps if many more continue to close down they can be turned into accommodation for people, especially young people who want to live in towns. No shortage of take away food, coffee shops and pubs

malificent7 · 11/03/2018 07:49

I like New Look but i always shop in their sales as fullnprice is too much for my shrinking wallet.

Slartybartfast · 11/03/2018 07:50

I dont buy clothes online.
I buy clothes for my teens rarely, it used to be NEw Look was the place to go

Toomanytealights · 11/03/2018 07:51

Surely the shops to go would be the ones without many customers?

Mari50 · 11/03/2018 07:52

Warehouse is in trouble, closed lots of stores

TeaAddict235 · 11/03/2018 07:52

Agree with @Turquoisetamborine , not been a mum for as long (I.e, having strict time and energy demands on my when out shopping), but I have found Sainsbos increasingly being my one stop shop for food and clothes. I can get a meal from the coffee shop for the kids and then carry on in the store once they're satiated. I've often picked up clothes, books, homeward etc in Lidl too along with food and toys. All of that would have previously gone to various shops on the high street.

ShimmeringIce · 11/03/2018 07:53

Definitely HOF. Our local store just had a major ‘refurbishment’ but they didn’t touch the shoddy building. The aircon never works and the cafe is like a sauna. The kitchenwares department looks abandoned with barely any stock just flung onto shelves and they’ve lost the Paperchase concession (very bitter about this Grin). Instead, there’s more designer makeup and sparkly shoes than anyone could ever need and the clothing dept has spotlights which shine in your eyes so you can’t see the clothes Confused It’s as if they’ve had the 60 Minute Makeover team in!

I really don’t understand the H&M love on here. I keep trying because it’s always recommended for tall skinny children but the quality is just awful, as is the women’s sizing Hmm

Fintress · 11/03/2018 07:53

Monsoon and Jones have already closed in the city closest to me.

Jasmine1111 · 11/03/2018 07:54

New look charge for click and collect which annoys me!

I like their stuff so will be sad if they go. Sometimes you just need to be able to go to a shop and get something!

Shadow666 · 11/03/2018 07:55

Catch Kidston sells a lot abroad though. They recently did a collaboration with Disney that sold very well.

Laura Ashley are in trouble. I think they have the potential to pull out of it though.

ShackUp · 11/03/2018 07:58

I think M&S will ditch everything except food and pants Grin and will still measure bras wrong

I'm not sure how long mothercare will last. It doesn't do any one thing particularly well but doesn't have a big enough range at least in my local stores.
...
I agree with others on WH Smiths and Toys R Us was just a matter of time.
...
The Boots round here are a combination of very tiny chemists and retail park places that focus on make up etc so do quite well. Marks and Spencer closed their very small food outlets and have focused more on the retail parks again. Though the big stores in the big malls and cities do well.
...
I would have said Argos too as it seemed like an old fashioned version of Amazon. However, since they were bought by sainsburys they've put an argos inside my local supermarket. It's very dangerous... 😂

ISpentTheDayInBed · 11/03/2018 08:04

Monsoon and Gap. Monsoon closed for refurbishment in Manchester City centre two years ago and has never reopened. Their clothes are so old fashioned and fussy. I'm way older than their target shopper and I think they are frumpy. Useful for casual holiday trousers, that's about it for me, and I only buy those in the sale.

Gaps pricing very strange. Saw some line tshirts in store £22.95, same ones £16.95 online and then 40% VIP discount.

Flashinggreen · 11/03/2018 08:04

DH is in mourning over Maplin, he’s such and electronics geek. He made an online order the day before they announced it had gone under, so I think he thinks he jinxed it!

I think Debenhams will go.

Slartybartfast · 11/03/2018 08:04

In my town the Mothercare went ages ago,
the Thorntons has gone

People mention WH Smith however I guess the train station/newsagent side of things keeps them afloat

eloisesparkle · 11/03/2018 08:04

How can Poundland sell branded stuff so much cheaper than, for example Tesco ?

Flashinggreen · 11/03/2018 08:05

And GAP!

The one near us is now an outlet store, was always overpriced IMO.

thecatsarecrazy · 11/03/2018 08:05

I'm afraid I just go where it's cheap. I'm a jeans and t shirt person. My jeans are m and s but always bought from ebay wouldn't pay what they ask in there. A pile of t shirts from primark that get binned when they start having holes in them. I had some next vouchers when ds3 was born. Bought him a few clothes but wouldn't choose to go there personally.

Figgygal · 11/03/2018 08:05

Our local centre is looking pretty bare these days, They've lost 3 restaurants, body shop, game and now prezzo is closing. We are full of cheap shops like card factory and Poundland and charity shops though do still have new look, Dorothy Perkins, Argos, peacocks, Claire's, m&co, next and t k maxx oh and m&s food

Figgygal · 11/03/2018 08:06

Oh we do have a Thornton too

Pengggwn · 11/03/2018 08:06

eloisesparkle

Poundland sells things for £1 that are worth more than that at RRP, but lots of things that are worth less.
