The word 'Easter' on Easter eggs

Cadburys Easter egg advert popped up on my newsfeed tonight and I have just wasted a good 30 mins of my precious time on this earth scrolling through the comments left by complete morons people directed at Cadburys.

Apparently Cadburys have removed the word Easter from their boxes. This has been done (apparently again) to appease non-Christians, it is sacrilegious and many people are furiously are demanding that Cadburys reinstate the word EASTER on their packaging forthwith.

AIBU to think that the world has gone mad?
AIBU to think that 'God' (whoever or whatever he might be) doesn't give a flying fk what is written on the box of a chocolate egg?

0)For anyone who thinks they were labelled 'Easter eggs' in the past, Cadburys along with every other chocolate manufacturer have called their eggs 'chocolate eggs' for years. They sometimes add in 'Easter' but not always. (See attached pic of retro. packaging).

My buttons one said "This Easter egg belongs to..."

wildduckhunt · 10/03/2018 21:55

I can’t remember the last time I saw the word “Easter” on one of the boxes. It’s been chocolate egg for as long as I remember.

What’s your AIBU? Idiots are being idiots somewhere on the internet?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/03/2018 21:57

Amusingly Help for Heroes have released an egg for Easter too. I can't find the word Easter on the packaging.

gwenneh · 10/03/2018 21:57

That's a lot of "apparently" that a five-second Google could have avoided.

RoseWhiteTips · 10/03/2018 21:58

The chocolate eggs are symbolic of Easter, specifically rolling the stone from the entrance of the tomb of Jesus Christ.

Removing the word will not remove the significance.

InspMorse · 10/03/2018 22:01

What’s your AIBU?
See OP!

I wonder how many of the outraged people complaining to Cadburys actually go to church? Grin

Exactly Rose. Although the tradition/symbolism is in painted eggs not mass produced chocolate ones from multi-million pound corporations!

I pointed that exact same thing out using pictures of old Nestle Easter eggs when someone on my FB was ranting about it.

Brokenbiscuit · 10/03/2018 22:05

Really? I thought the eggs were pagan, and just got adopted as part of the Easter imagery.

If they're really Christian, why don't we eat chocolate tombstones instead?

I seriously doubt this. Can’t wait to hear what the Easter bunny is meant to be symbolic of.

carryondoctor · 10/03/2018 22:05

It's like all those Christmas cards that don't have religious pictures... disgusting.

(Insert homer gif here: "in case you can't tell, i'm being sarcastic"!!! Grin)

theymademejoin · 10/03/2018 22:07

I thought they were a pagan symbol of fertility and new life and were, like many pagan traditions, appropriated by christians as part of their recruitment campaign in the early years of Christianity.

edwinbear · 10/03/2018 22:07

I'm focused on what's inside the box rather than what's written on the outside!

SimonBridges · 10/03/2018 22:07

Easter eggs are pre Christian anyway. It was a celebration of spring and when the chickens started to lay again.

Also, Cadbury’s haven’t removed the word, it hasn’t been there in years.

carryondoctor · 10/03/2018 22:08

Constant - I got dragged to church regularly as a child, and I was definitely taught that the egg symbolises the tomb. When you crack it, it's jesus' tomb cracking open after 3 days.

Or, you know, total rubbish and an excuse to eat total rubbish, whatever you believe!!

That sounds seriously far-fetched!Grin

SimonBridges · 10/03/2018 22:11

That’s is what Christians say the egg symbolises, and for many Christians I’m sure it does.
However eggs are a pagan carry over from the festival of the vernal equinox.

MotherofDinosaurs · 10/03/2018 22:11

The eggs are pagan symbols of fertility in line with Oestara which celebrates new life and the spring and stuff.

The Christians blatantly nicked Easter

InspMorse · 10/03/2018 22:11

Easter eggs are definitely symbolic in several religions. The Easter bunny not so much! Grin

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 10/03/2018 22:12

Bloody hell! Since when has chocolate had any religious significance, it’s called marketing and we are all suckers for it!

childmindingmumof3 · 10/03/2018 22:13

Oh come on, the egg = tomb link is clearly ridiculous!

Easter is a pagan spring fertility festival, hence bunnies, eggs, chicks, lambs.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 10/03/2018 22:14

Easter= Oestara=oestrogen=new life, fertility.

Unless you're a creationist I suppose.

InspMorse · 10/03/2018 22:14

childmind Google Christianity and Easter eggs!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 10/03/2018 22:16

Chocolate eggs are not symbolic for Easter.

Eggs are.

Anasnake · 10/03/2018 22:17

Read the moronic comments on Cadbury's FB page - they fund Isis and 'contain halal' apparently. People believe utter shite.
