Is it normal to become sleepy and disorientated in the hairdressers?

I am extremely sensitive to touch. Someone only has to brush past me and I get the shivers.

At the hairdressers all the touching of hair, scalp and face makes me really sleepy and lethargic. I often have trouble keeping my eyes open. With that I start to feel disorientated too - like a bit spaced out.

I have a lot of autistic traits and just wondered if this could be another one or do other people get this?

Many of them do a scalp massage when they wash your hair which is supposed to make you relaxed ie sleepy and a bit spaced out (that's how I epxerience it!)

Sounds like you have this but a bit more extreme!

Also, salons have very harsh overhead lighting. This affects me and I can't get out quick enough!

LoveEricLove · 10/03/2018 12:54

I get this. I'm not Autistic at all.

Ours used to do the massage but it would practically finish me off. I used to feel high!

I once had a full body massage in Thailand and fell asleep. I woke up wondering what the hell was going on when little Thai children had my bag and contents all over the place and one of them was asking me how to get my phone on! The woman who was massaging me didn't have the heart to wake me up so left me at the mercy of her kids

A form of ASMR probably- there's tonnes of hairdresser ASMR on You Tube anyway!

Assburgers · 10/03/2018 12:56

Yep. That, plus the lighting, plus having to talk to someone you don’t know that well, plus looking like a dickhead & being surrounded by people, all makes for a really knackering experience & is why I only go once a year. Though I think I’d probably get better at it if I did it more often, but urgh. No.

MissMary0fSweden · 10/03/2018 12:57

Hairdresser role play videos I mean.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 10/03/2018 13:09

I always doze off at the hairdressers - mine says she takes it as a compliment that I’m totally relaxed!

Branleuse · 10/03/2018 13:10

does it have flourescent lights in the hairdressers. I cant cope with these lights and have had to give up courses and not go in certain shops because of lighting

SnibbleAgain · 10/03/2018 13:13

The lighting in hairdressers is often a bit much.

They need to see what they're doing really well I suppose.

I'm exactly the same. Not autistic as far as I'm aware either and not just at the hairdressers. For example, if someone was to lightly touch or stroke my arm, it makes me almost nod off.

blueskyinmarch · 10/03/2018 13:29

I am like this too and i am not remotely autistic. All the washing and cutting makes me drowsy then the drying almost finishes me off. It is blissful. My DM hates getting her hair cut and i cannot understand it at all!

ParadiseLaundry · 10/03/2018 13:33

I agree with MissMary, sounds like ASMR. I get like this when at the opticians.

SwedishEdith · 10/03/2018 13:44

It's the hairdryers. It used to send my daughter to sleep as a baby. It's a pretty well-known tip, like putting them in front of washing machines.

Vitalogy · 10/03/2018 13:56

Yes I get this too. Feel cold when I get outside too. The head message with conditioner is great. I must say I laughed at your Thai massage incident. All this seems to be getting worse the older I get, so stiff too, hobble from chair to sink sometimes.
