To say this isn't intolerance?

NomsQualityStreets · 10/03/2018 09:34

I am fully prepared to be told IBU as I don't know enough about it.

DP has convinced himself he is gluten intolerant based on the fact he gets very bloated after a night out/drinks with friends when he's had Ale or beer (something with high contents of gluten) or eaten lots of bread/pizza etc.

He has been eating only gluten free bread and pasta since, allowing for treats containing gluten like pizza and cakes etc sometimes on a weekend.

Does this really sound like an intolerance? Most people I know get bloated after drinking beer or stuffing their face with over half a pizza, it's just what happens. I questioned him and he also added that he feels "sluggish" and has no energy after having it -again seems pretty normal.

Im in charge or the shopping and it's a PITA for me to keep on buying his GF stuff as we are rural and it's over 40mins out of a shopping trip to go to a supermarket we only need 2 things from as we get all our other shopping from local butchers and bits in an Aldi which is close by.

Should I suggest he just tries something healthier like good quality whole meal seeded bread and whole meal pastas rather than soft white etc see how it goes or am I BU and should I just go with it?

He only has about 2 slices of bread a day.

I'm lactose intolerant and tbh it sounds like how I react when I have a lot in my system. It's OK if I have a bit, but any build up and I feel dreadful.

He wants to avoid it 'cause it makes him feel shit, whatever you want to call it.

Grace789 · 10/03/2018 09:38

I agree op he probably has gut rot from all the beer and takeaway he's consumed. If it was an ongoing issue whilst he maintained a fairly healthy diet, maybe but if its just when he's eating crap no wonder he feels like crap!

BexConnor · 10/03/2018 09:43

Why don't you ask him to keep a food diary for a couple of weeks and see if you can identify an obvious problem with gluten. If he gets tummy pain/bloating after a beer but not after ham sandwiches or whatever, that may tell you something.

There are lots of things that can cause those types of symptoms so it's worth doing some basic investigation - plus if he was worried enough to go to his GP at any point, he'd be able to show it to them.

BarryTheKestrel · 10/03/2018 09:45

My DH is a coeliac so can't have any gluten but I don't buy gluten free bread (which frankly tastes rank) and buy a few bags of pasta when I'm near a shop that sells it. Otherwise it's pretty easy to eat a naturally gluten free diet so that's what we do, because it's really expensive to buy substitutes and they generally aren't required. I only buy lasagne sheets and spaghetti because we like lasagne and bologanse/meatballs every now and again.

DH was diagnosed through being tired and run down all the time. His digestive issues are minimal as he is a silent coeliac. So it is likely that bloating and sluggishness could be identifiers of an intolerance.

Shouldn't he let an actual doctor diagnose him? They're pretty smart having gone to medical school and all. Grin

I had years of stomach problems they couldn't work out, it was only when I did an elimination diet I figured it out but I talked it over with my doctor the next time I saw him to see if it also sounded like lactose intolerance to him and he agreed. The only reason I wasn't diagnosed sooner was because my silly Mom who has zero medical training insisted to a doctor that dairy didn't make me ill when I'd asked if it could be that because my biological father is lactose intolerant.

Point is your husband shouldn't self diagnose nor expect you to rearrange things based on said self diagnosis without ever consulting a doctor.

Also how well does anyone ever feel after eating a bunch of pizza downed with beer? I don't drink beer so I have no experience of my own to draw off of just what others have told me.

Thanks for the replies!

Oh and I forgot to mention he'd complain in the past about feeling sluggish and bloated if he had let's say some pasta.
One day I accidentally made ordinary pasta with meatballs but (I realised once it was a bit too late so didn't say anything) he didn't know and he never said a word after eating it!

I think it's a placebo for him.
I mean if I was to eat half a garlic bread and then some pasta and wash it down with a beer I'm sure I'd be bloated in the morning Grin

I'll tackle him about it soon, he's one of those annoying people that get very very hard headed once they decide on something.

The problem with getting him to keep a food diary is that he’s already self-diagnosed and therefore is going to “feel bad” after gluten. Unless you can slip in a lot of gluten-containing foods he doesn’t recognise...

I think you can order gluten-free bread etc online to be delivered, if you’ve room in the freezer. Or you could make shopping for it his job and see how long he still feels the need for it?

However there’s nothing wrong with saying “pizza makes me feel rough, I’ll eat less of it”.

Lifeisabeach09 · 10/03/2018 12:04

I'd buy normal and say it was GF.
Definitely normal to feel bloated after beer (gassy) and takeaways as they are calorie-loaded and over-consumed.

Bluelady · 10/03/2018 12:07

There are degrees of intolerance. A friend gets the symptoms described here, my stepdaughter is in excruciating pain if she has literally a crumb of gluten.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 10/03/2018 12:11

Has he given up beer?

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 10/03/2018 12:17

Why the fuck would he choose to eat gf bread and pasta without a diagnosis? (And this is from a long term coeliac) as its grim. Get a proper diagnosis, get a prescription and a season ticket for prescriptions. Oh and go and fetch your own dh! (Or maybe start eating healthier and cutting out the pizza and beer fests)

blastomama · 10/03/2018 12:18

In studies, the majority of people who claim a gluten intolerance show no symptoms at all when they think what they are eating is gluten free, and vice versa.
Many experts says that gluten intolerance doesn't exist at all.

starzig · 10/03/2018 12:34

If he doesn't want to eat gluten he doesn't have to. You also don't need to buy special gluten free products. Many foods are naturally gluten free.

Member984815 · 10/03/2018 13:53

Aldi has a cheap gluten free range.

DingDongDenny · 10/03/2018 14:01

I think you are really out of order pretending things are gluten free if they aren't. It's his chloice and his body

You can decide not to go out of your way to buy him stuff, but don't lie about it

My husband has a gluten intolerance - he is the last person to claim this without good reason and was gutted when he realised that was why he was feeling ill and tired and had the runs so often

He's been off gluten now for a few years and has loads more energy and is much healthier. He isn't a celiac - so there is no diagnosis - but he definitely feels better for it

blastomama · 10/03/2018 14:26

He doesn't know he has a gluten intolerance at all. There could be many reasons why he feels better not eating foods containing gluten.

Namelesswonder · 10/03/2018 14:33

Yeast intolerance or wheat intolerance can often be mistaken for gluten intolerance as they are both often found in the same items. Also does he avoid all sources of gluten (oats, barley and rye) or just wheat? It’s not as simple as saying it must be gluten. Also if he is eating gluten free substitutes does he realize how loaded with extra fat and sugar they are - to make them palatable?
