To think about drinking vinegar?

My period turned up yesterday at the most inconvenient time. I have a wedding to go to tomorrow and an interview for a new job on Monday. Typically, my periods are super heavy and last a full 7 days (had the Mirena coil fitted almost 2 weeks ago so they will hopefully ease up at some point in the future). I read on a few websites that drinking apple cider vinegar may help reduce the flow or completely stop it altogether. Does anyone know if there’s any truth in this? I’m so desperate for it to go away, as my wedding outfit for tomorrow is light colored and as tomorrow will be my heaviest day I’m positive it’ll end in disaster! Sad

If you are talking about drinking lots, neat, don't. It is pretty acidic and it could give you stomach ache.

You could by incontinence pad/pants to wear with a high absorbency tampon. This would give you extra security. Additionally you could ask a pharmacist if there is anything you can take to help,

Never heard of that method. You'll have to make do with tampons and double sanitary pads I guess.

Take three ibuprofen every six hours. It helps to reduce the flow. It worked for me (although is best just as period is starting or before) and I’ve just woken up vomiting in a pool of blood thanks to my routinely shitty first day. I try not to do it all the time, since I suspect ibuprofen is not that great used so often, but it does work. Remember the maximum amount in 24 hours still applies.

Cornettoninja · 10/03/2018 07:48

Ibuprofen can help lessen the flow but you can't take it on an empty stomach and if you have any digestive problems at all don't take it. It only works for me only if I take it regularly throughout and it really isn't great for your stomach.

I might have this wrong but I thought you could buy something over the counter now?

Continence pads are definitely the way to go for really heavy flows.

Get to a chemist and ask the pharmacist for tranexamic acid. That lightens the blood flow, my sister used to flood through multiple pads but not anymore since taking these tablets.

I don't think that will help, sorry OP :(

Maybe try something extra absorbent and changing it loads - or go and buy something nice and glam but dark, then you won't be worrying?

ItWentInMyEye · 10/03/2018 07:58

Tranexamic acid worked for me, and I also buy super plus extra tampons alongside a thicker night time towel.

RosyPrimroseface · 10/03/2018 07:58

Would a mooncup help? i find they hold more than pads and are less leaky.

TuscanMum · 10/03/2018 08:01

I drink ACV every day and it definitely doesn’t work for what you want. Sorry.

Fugitivefrombrusstice · 10/03/2018 08:02

I don't think it would do you any harm if diluted properly (lots of people drink it for various alleged health benefits) so you could give it a go, but I don't think it will help Sad

At the wedding, use both a tampon and a heavy flow night time pad with wings, and just be religious about changing both every couple of hours. Ibuprofen can also help reduce flow because it reduces cramping - take a couple every 4 hours (but only for one day or you can cause damage to your stomach).

Have a lovely time at the wedding and try not to let this hang over you x

whifflesqueak · 10/03/2018 08:03

I got a pill from the doctor that delayed it for my wedding.

I wonder if it can be purchased from a pharmacist?

Powerpuffwoman · 10/03/2018 08:17

Hmm. I've been taking two or three teaspoons a day since last summer. Cycle always normal. Then a month ago I increased to four tablespoons a day (for reasons not related to period) just as a temporary measure, and I noticed my period was 2 days late this cycle, but couldn't work out why. Period was as normal when it came however, no reduction in flow. Though I no longer get very heavy periods anyway, they are moderate to mild now. So I may not have really noticed.

Tranexamic acid definitely works if you can get that - I had to get it on prescription back in the day though? I'd try the ibuprofen thing too.

Night time pads and tampons, and very frequent toilet trips to change.

Sorry, I've been where you are and it's no fun!

buckeejit · 11/03/2018 07:11
