Is payment landlords responsibility or mine?

We live in private rented accommodation.

Found out the other day we have a rat coming into the house, called the council out and paid the fee of £60. They laid poison down and found a massive hole under the oven (which is blocked off by a thin piece of wood which the pest control officer moved) where they are obviously coming in. They also found a hole I the outside of the house under the cellar.

I’m sure guidelines say it’s our responsibility to get rid of pests unless it’s caused by a problem with the house (which in this case it was)

WIBU to ask my landlord to pay the £60 council fee?

You should contact someone who deals with housing issues as making things awkward with landlords can lead to eviction even if they say it’s not as you complained

what @meme70 says

In this current climate, id advise anyone that if there are any minor non structural things to do with your rented accomodation, try and sort them out yourselves if at all possible if you can afford it, because otherwise youre likely to get an eviction notice not long after

I think as PPs have said, the landlord may also potentially say your lifestyle is attracting rats and chuck you out? Pick your battles I guess.

It’s definitely not our lifestyle! They are on the whole street apparently we are all having problems.
We keep a clean tidy home. They are obviously just coming in from the cold through that hole.
We struggle a bit financially which is why I asked about the refund - never even thought of eviction Confused

Oh and landlord knows about the rats!

Definitely the landlords responsibility at least morally!

meme70 · 09/03/2018 16:15

Tbh it’s only £60 I don’t see it’s worth telling your landlord it’s their responsibility
You say the whole street has the problem then that’s usually rubbish not disposed of.

We once had rats come in the house as the water jars broke the main sewer and they wouldn’t take responsibility we had dustbins no rubbish on streets so we had to pay £120 for a rat catcher and we owned the house
