To ask if you had a D&C, did your periods get lighter?

Had my first one last year and ever since, I’ve had light periods lasting about 3 days. Previously I had heavier ones (nothing crazy though).

Had a second D&C four weeks ago and thought I had my period today, but it’s even lifter. Not enough for a panty liner.

Is this normal? It’s panicking me making me think I’ve got ashermans or something.

Bump. Any experiences?

Yes - this happened to me after two d&c. I had them close together as the first one failed to remove all. I noticed my periods were a lot lighter and 3 days instead of 5/6. I was really worried about Ashermans too and went to GP who basically said in 20 years of practice he had never come across one case so was highly unlikely! Advised me to monitor periods for 6 more months. In the end I paid to have a consultation scan and HSG with Ashermans specialist in London as with age and no children I felt I didn't have time to waste. The svan showed potential scarring but everything came back clear from the HSG. Still not sure why periods were lighter after the surgery but did conceive the month after the HSG (they say it slightly raises the odds of conception).
I had convinced myself that I was scarred and can totally understand your fears over this. It's such a little known condition. For peace of mind I decided to pay privately but it is a lot if money. Maybe your GP will be more helpful though and could refer you to NHS treatment? The specialists name was Dr Adrian Lowesoft (in Harley st). I hope you get some answers soon.

Thank you for that reply. I was also told it’s rare when I asked. No one seems to care my periods are so light, and painless now - wouldn’t be an issue if they weren’t cripplingky painful before all this. I still get severe pelvic pain and they think it’s endo but that my periods themselves are lighter and less painful worries me.

Was your next pregnancy okay? Since the first d and c I’ve lost three pregnancies (five pregnancies, 1 successful the rest were lossss) but I don’t know if it’s connected.

Am 36 weeks now and few minor issues but that's to do with something else.
Re the pain - after d&c I noticed that my period pain was different- it was all in the back and lower down. Previously I'd had stomach cramps pre period. So both my pain and heaviness of periods did chsnfe after d&c. Oddly during this pregnancy I've only felt cramps in my back too.
Sorry for all of your losses, can you revisit GP and push for further assessment? I thought NHS should investigate after 3 concurrent losses? Can you push for that?
It's really frustrating as I just kept getting told that it's rare, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Me too, had one last June and since then 2-3 days light bleeding rather that 5 heavy. And no pregnancy either.

Hortonlovesahoo · 09/03/2018 07:54

My first period post d&c was super painful but after that they were very light and “easy” to manage. I’d recommend keeping a record and track of them regardless as it’s useful for telling the doctor if you ever needn’t to discuss it

CatsForgotPassword · 09/03/2018 07:56

Jeds I’m being investigated and they have found signs of endometriosis and a ruined tube. I’ve had gynae problems for years so this doesn’t surprise me, I’m just concerned this could be something else to make it even worse.

I also found periods less painful after I had DC, so it could just be pregnancy in general but it is worrying me.

Congratulations btw! Smile My dc was born at 36 weeks.

Glad you're having investigations Cats I hope that you get some positive news soon. Maybe NHS will perform a HSG to determine Ashermans?
Thanks for congrats. I'd better pack my hospital bag then Wink

I have 6 weeks to go so no first-hand experience yet I'm afraid.

My Mother swears up and down that mine will get lighter, less painful, and moody etc after I have my first child...as hers did...

Except I vividly recall her being an absolute raging, volatile, hag every period she ever had when I was growing up and her using heavy flow pads and moaning incessantly about her cramps. Hmm

She is a drama llama so hard to guess how painful they actually were. I was the second and last child she had, so while I'd like to believe her I'm extremely sceptical. Grin

Hi ladies, I'm curious did any of you have success either finding out why your periods were lighter or having a successful pregnancy afterwards?
I am asking as I have also been experiencing shorter lighter periods after a D&E which is worrying me a lot. Thanks in advance x

AlexandraL7 · 14/01/2021 22:18

I’m curious too as I’ve been getting more pains that’s normal in my back abs lower stomach since having my d&c in October. How are you all doing now? Would love some peace of mind!! X

Jeds55 · 16/01/2021 22:51

Hi @Crumpet22 and @AlexandraL7 sorry I've just noticed these replies now.
To answer your questions I had a successful pregnancy after the two d&c - got pregnant 5 months after second one. My periods have remained much lighter than they were before it all happened but have had the odd heavier one - this could be due to my age though (39 now). Most months I have very little pain but if I do get it it's still in the back.
I've had 3 miscarriages since my successful pregnancy and opted for the tablets for the missed miscarriage this time (had awful experience with them too). I'm not sure what's causing the mc. Supposed to have investigations but all delayed due to covid.
Hope you guys find some answers. It's frustrating how little information there is out there about this sort of thing.

Crumpet22 · 16/01/2021 23:32

Thank you for the reply, especially as it's an old thread I wasn't sure anyone would see it. Sorry to hear about your miscarriages but congrats on your successful pregnancy =)
Please may I ask did you have a hysteroscopy to remove scarring with Mr Lower? Was it after this that you were able to have a successful pregnancy? Thanks in advance :)

AlexandraL7 · 17/01/2021 09:03

Thanks @Jeds55 for all the info, really puts my mind at rest that you had a successful pregnancy :) sorry to hear about all the miscarriages though, that must be so tough. I’ve been doing the easy@home ovulation sticks with the app and it says I’m not ovulating which is such a relief as I really thought I wasn’t due to having such a light period, so happy that I am! Fingers crossed now for a pregnancy! X

Jeds55 · 17/01/2021 15:46

@Crumpet22 I had an internal scan with Dr Lowesoft which showed potential scarring but he then performed a hsg (where they put dye in tubes) and it showed they were all clear thankfully. I actually got pregnant (with successful pregnancy) the month I had the hsg. I know you probably are already but I would make notes each month of what your periods are like so that if/when you see a doctor you have it all there for them.

Jeds55 · 17/01/2021 15:48

@AlexandraL7 that's good news about positive ovulation tests. Good luck!

Thank you very much for the reply. I am in an Ashermans Support Group on Facebook (even though I havent had a female diagnosis as yet) and my symptoms seem to be synonymous with a lot of ladies on there =/ I think I am probably at high risk for miscarriage now as I'm pretty sure there must be some damage done in there due to the bg change in my periods direct after my uterine surgery. I am just deciding whether to have a hysteroscopy done privately or not. I had a hycosy scan which showed no scarring but that I had a thin lining (however no scan is definitively able to see scarring). I think successful pregnancies can still happen but as pregnancy is not an exact science it depends where the baby implants. Thanks again for your help xx

Did your periods ever get heavier? Did your lining recover? Thanks xx
