DDs leg

tomhazard · 08/03/2018 14:47

My DD age 5 has recently been complaining of intermittent pain in the top of her left thigh. Gone of for a couple of weeks now. Not agony type pain but obviously enough for her to mention it. She is quite active and does swimming and trampolining.
My googling has come up with this is a symptom of leukaemia - as a natural worrier I am now majorly freaking out and am thinking of getting to the GP. My DH thinks I'm overreacting to think it could be this and it's probably muscular due to her sport.
Aibu to worry? It's likely that I am because I worry about everything but can't this out of my head now.

Probably sport or growing pains, both are far more common and therefore more likely

DalekDalekDalek · 08/03/2018 14:49

Highly likely that your DH is right. I would visit the doctor though for your peace of mind though if you are worried.

MaderiaCycle · 08/03/2018 14:49

Maybe a trip to the GP. maybe a trip for you if you think you’re experiencing anxiety?

tomhazard · 08/03/2018 14:50

I didn't know about growing pains- is this normal age 5? I thought it was a toddler thing

Madeira my anxieties are always linked to health - have had it before over something to do with myself but not before with the DC. She is otherwise a healthy girl my DH is probably right.

Google pretty much says everything is a symptom of cancer.

gamerchick · 08/03/2018 14:52

She’s still growing at 5. My 11 yr old still gets an aching leg sometimes.

If you’re re concerned then take her to the docs. From what you’ve said it’s more likely she’s pulled a muscle and it’s bothering her a bit.

Step away from google.

SweetMoon · 08/03/2018 16:04

Much more likely to be growing pains, very common at this age especially if they are having a bit of a spurt. But go see your go if you're worried otherwise you won't be able to stop thinking the worst

StellaWouldYouTakeMeHome · 08/03/2018 16:15

My daughter has hyper mobility, this causes her to have similar pains. It could be that

KimmySchmidt1 · 08/03/2018 16:34

Can you ask her if it’s the muscle and try massaging it to see if that helps? I used to get terrible growing pains in my thighs and my mum would massage them.

Clevs · 08/03/2018 16:46

Can she have a week or two off sport to see if it gets any better?

tomhazard · 08/03/2018 16:59

Clevs yes that's a good idea perhaps it just needs a rest.

My friends 6 year old dd had really bad pains in her hip, to the point she ended up in hospital overnight. The pains stopped, and they have no real idea what it was, but I believe growing pains were suggested. If you are worried, she the gp. Im sure its nothing though.

Coulddowithanap · 08/03/2018 21:37

My friends daughter had leukaemia and when she had the pain (that you mentioned is a symptom) it was very painful, like screaming/crying pain.. (hopefully that will put your mind at rest, it's so easy to think the worst when googling).

It sounds more like growing pains but if you are worried then it wouldn't hurt to visit your GP.

choccybiscuit · 08/03/2018 21:37

I had growing pains in my thighs when I was young. I remember it went on for a few months and it was very uncomfortable, especially when doing PE at school.

Fugitivefrombrusstice · 08/03/2018 21:38

She's an active child - a pulled muscle or simply muscle fatigue are both a billion times more likely than leukaemia. If it doesn't get better by itself see your GP but please don't worry yourself sick!

mynameismrbloom · 08/03/2018 21:39

I had growing pains until my teens. Horrible, kept me awake at night.

See your GP to put your mind at rest.

Grilledaubergines · 08/03/2018 21:40

Has she had a cold recently? One of my DSs has pains like this and we were sent to the hospital by our GP who said some children get joint pain (particularly thigh and hip) with a cold or just after. Sure enough it went.

Google is not your friend if you’re anxious or want health related info. If you must Google, use NHS as a prefix. There are plenty of crank sites out there.

QueenDramaLlama · 08/03/2018 21:44

Leukemia would have many other symptoms that go along with it so if the leg pain is her only symptom it's extremely unlikely to be that.

brownelephant · 08/03/2018 21:45

pains without obvious explanation (sprain, over exercise, bumps) especially if one sided should be checked out.
could something simple as a posture problem, asymetrical growths, or something more serious like an inflammation of joint/bone.

TheVanguardSix · 08/03/2018 21:49

I had terrible growing pains throughout childhood, exactly like the ones you're describing. But I would see the GP. You can't put a price on the peace of mind that comes with reassurance, which is almost certainly what you'll get. But best to get things checked out.

brownelephant · 08/03/2018 21:53

tbh if it was muscular due to activity, it would most likely affect both legs and not just the left one.
get her seen.
(and don't be fobbed off. my dc's 'growing pains' turned out to be a chronic bone disease)

KarmaStar · 08/03/2018 21:53

Hi OP
Firstly,go with your instinct.
Is your dc developing any other symptoms like excessive tiredness, lethargy, bruising, vomiting, high temperature?
If so go back to g.p and demand a blood test.
If not,and no other symptoms, all you can do is monitor her.
The reason I say trust your instinct is,when I was at hospital with several parents of very ill children,in every case they had known their child was ill but their doctors had said there was nothing wrong.it's to raw to say more on the subject but mum's do know best.
But please don't panic!it could easily be very minor..

Cath2907 · 08/03/2018 21:54

Leukaemia would very likely come with weight loss, nose bleeds / bruising, tiredness. My mum had it and these were the obvious symptoms and my daughter was tested due to these symptoms.

Growing pains / muscular sport related far far more likely. I’d give her calpol and a rest from sport for a week. If it doesn’t improve or she develops other symptoms see Gp

JaneEyre70 · 08/03/2018 22:06

My youngest 2 really suffered with growing pains. Hot water bottle at bedtime helps, and rubbing with magnesium oil. It's also a good idea to add a calcium supplement.
