To wonder if they are drilling next door?

Firstly, DH and I disagree massively about what's going on next door.

About 3 months ago we started hearing drilling sound. Thought it was strange to do it so late at night, but it's a one off. Except it has been happening now for about 4 nights per week for the last 3 months. Always between 8.30 and 9pm. Drilling noise. Hmm

What do you think they are up to?

Things we already know:
No banks or pubs nearby, so no good reason for building a tunnel
Retired so no job related drilling
Very nice people, so no deliberate attempt to sabotage bedtime
No pets, so not a cat purring really really loud against the wall
Always about the same time, but don't think it's an alarm as too drilly sounding

Exercise equipment? Treadmill/exercise bike tyoe thing near the wall?

Ubercornsdiscoball · 07/03/2018 20:49

Just ask them??????

DailyMailareDicks · 07/03/2018 20:55

Don't think it's exercise, as it only last about 10 mins with gaps in.

Ask them???? I'm British, I can't do that. What if they're offended?

Really loud cat?

One of mine you can hear from the next room despite only being a little cat.

Viewofhedges · 07/03/2018 20:58

Rowing machine. 10 mins is probably about all they can manage (about 2km)

Fuckoffee · 07/03/2018 21:03

Blender? Coffee grinder?
My mums mixer she uses to bake bread and cakes is ancient and really noisy. Do you get wafts of freshly baked bread a few hours later?

Or maybe they are hollowing our under the house to make a new room. Isn’t there a book where some kids do that so they don’t have to move to a bigger house?

DancingLedge · 07/03/2018 21:07

Was also coming on to say rowing machine.
Noisy, steady, sometimes slightly rhythmic sound.
Short burst enough for ordinary mortals.

Eminybob · 07/03/2018 21:07

Boiler kicking on/off. Ours is ancient and makes a right racket

Flomy · 07/03/2018 21:09

Nebuliser

AnoiaUnstickMyDrawers · 08/03/2018 07:01

Water hammer? It's where the pipes rattle and vibrate when the water is turned off quickly. Could it be bath/shower/dishes etc. time?

If it is water hammer you need to tell them, they might not be able to hear it and it can cause serious leaks.

BellBookandCandle · 08/03/2018 07:16

Could it be a nebuliser? My exSIL has one that was REALLY loud! So did my ex-next door neighbour - we always knew when she was using it.

LouiseH2017 · 08/03/2018 07:57

Am I the only person who thought vibrator? Blush

DailyMailareDicks · 08/03/2018 08:44

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Rowing machine - I'm used to the sound of that and don't think it's the same.

Nebuliser is a really good shout, NDN H is quite frail and they've just converted the downstairs living room in to a bedroom for him. This is exactly when the drilling started. So we assumed DIY at first, but no one has this many shelves to put up.

Boiler was moved in the conversion and is now in their garage, so it can't be that.

Vibrator - 😂 I'll try to forget that, as the mental image is disturbing.
