Hello - I was always better at English than maths.
Is there anyone who can please help us solve this?

Find three pairs of numbers that satisfy these equations:
2a +b = 13
2c-d=8

Thanks muchly in advance

A=1 B=11
A=2 B = 9
A=3 B=7

Twinkleheth · 07/03/2018 15:54

2a+b=13
2a =13-b
a= (13-b) divided 2

So if you say b=3 for example then a=5

staremma · 07/03/2018 15:54

2c-d=8

(2x5)-2=8
(2x6)-4=8
(2x7)-6=8

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 07/03/2018 15:54

C=5 D=2
C=6 D=4
C=7 D=6

ThisIsThe · 07/03/2018 15:54

C =10 D= 12
C=8 D=10
C =7 D =8

2a + b = 13

a = 2
b = 9
--
a = 3
b = 7
--
a = 1
b = 9

2c-d=8

c = 10
d = 12
---
c = 5
d = 2
---
c = 1,000,000
d = 1,999,992

staySeated · 07/03/2018 15:57

a = 1
b = 9

is rubbish! Sorry

Find three pairs of numbers that satisfy these equations:
2a +b = 13
2c-d=8

Re-arrange the equations. (If you swap the sides, you must swap the signs)
b=13-2a
-d=8-2c therefore, d=2c-8

Pick a number for a - shall we say 5
So b = 13 - 2 × 5
b = 13 - 10. (always do x first)
b = 3
First pair of numbers is a = 5, b = 3
Pick another number for a and repeat

Do the same for c and d.

Hope that helps

Mainly, because it doesn't say the three pairs of numbers, it indicates that there are multiple possible correct answers, so any old thing will do, as the posters above indicate.

Ah thanks all- have been through it with DS! Much appreciated!
