Trollhunters: The bane of MumsNet

Several regular users seem to make it their life's work to troll hunt on MN, even when posts are quite plausibly genuine. It's becoming a regular occurrence for posts to be taken down just simply because of the sheer amount of reports a post gets, rather than for genuine cause. But what is this doing to MN? How can we expect people to be open with their expressions/feelings/ life stories if they are questioned for being trolls and reported if there is even the hint of disagreement etc. (Thoughts here are from observing the Parishioner and the Hat thread, but are also based on many other threads I've followed here)

OP posts:

We aren't talking about those types of thread though Snowmagedon. Even MNHQ join in with LOLz when those daft trolly threads appear.

thevoiceofthebook · 07/03/2018 17:59

The ironic thing about that Reddit forum is that it's being trolled itself and needs moderation Grin

But how do they know who is a troll and who isn't. I thought the whole point of being a troll was that nobody can guess you're one. (Though I expect people do usually.)

ChaosNeverRains · 07/03/2018 18:27

And the thing is that it’s often so incredibly obvious that they can’t possibly be real. But HQ can’t always know for certain.

But does anyone remember the name of that poster who claimed to have lost premature twins a few years back? she actually joined mn a few weeks before, built up a bit of a persona and a following, she and the dh were splitting up, then she found out she was pregnant, then it was twins and then she was texting some mn’er from an ambulance to say that she was being rushed to hospital, and so the overnight vigils began, with her writing in incoherent english because she was so so so distraught and all she wanted was her babies and on and on she went.

People were on the verge of starting collections for her etc, but people had been reporting the threads for weeks and weeks and because there was no proof there was nothing HQ could or would do.

It was only when a poster started a separate thread saying “look, I know this is emotive, but people really need to take a step back when becoming over invested in these threads because they don’t really seem to be all they claim to be,” that others admitted they’d been reporting for weeks and had actually been told to stop doing so. And it was only then that HQ banned her. But she stayed on FB, used to send the poster she’d texted who had also lost twins iirc to tell her that she was going to kill herself if said poster went out etc.

And a few months later she was outed on another forum when a poster revealed that the pictures of her dead babies she had on her profile had been lifted from the internet. And she admitted everything was made up.

So for people who think that troll hunters are worse than lowlife like that, I urge you to think about just what kind of trolls there are out there. And for people who get over invested in the threads, do think about if a poster e.g. posts that they’ve just namechanged on their way to the hospital or just joined while in the depths of a screaming argument with their partner, or while they’re lying in a pool of their own blood, how likely is that really? Genuinely?

I find it bizarre those who complain most about Reddit are glued to it like shit on a blanket.

I know...it's crazy. Just like those people on Reddit who complain about MN are also glued to MN.

PortiaCastis · 07/03/2018 18:50

But Reddit are glued too here so where's the difference

thevoiceofthebook · 07/03/2018 18:51

What would be really crazy would be having a conversation with someone across forums Grin

Madness lies that way.

Gowgirl · 07/03/2018 18:54

I have conversations across the forums 😂

I don't believe most on Reddit despise MN though, just the way things have been handled. Lots of Reddit users still use MN.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 07/03/2018 19:00

I agree sumthucker

Most of posters ive seen on there seem to like MN just not the trolls and moderation

keepKalm · 07/03/2018 19:32

OP, in the OP you said

Several regular users seem to make it their life's work to troll hunt on MN

I honestly don't think that can be the case. MNHQ warn regular troll hunters, will give out weekly suspensions and will ban posters if they continually troll hunt. I sometimes wonder if some posters appear to get away with more troll hunting than others but I bet is simply because they haven't been reported to MNHQ. If trolls and troll hunters (and the nasty goady fuckers) aren't reported then nothing gets done.

himalayansalt · 07/03/2018 21:09

I've been on Mumsnet for years, maybe more than 10 years, and the truth is I just can't be bothered to report troll posts any more. I've done it hundreds of times and I'm bored with it. I decide a thread is trolly just from the title or op or first page and I'm 99% right, but I don't have the interest or enthusiasm to report any more.

The MNTrolls group on Reddit are just now experiencing what it's like to be infiltrated by trolls. It's really quite funny how they are "dealing" with it.

And some posters from here, who moan endlessly about Reddit, also waste their otherwise valuable time visiting said site, namechanging, even though the mods can see it the same poster, downvoting and sockpuppeting themselves. It’s an odd thing for such posters to be doing considering they proclaim to find it all so sad.

Oh. Where did VK go? I didn't think she posted anything delete worthy? Or is it the Reddit thing?
