Every ‘official’ website says you cannot get normal monthly periods and be pregnant yet so many people on forum boards say it’s happened to them. I understand people can have light bleeding but all the medical literature says that heavy monthly periods are impossible - I’m confused!

The blood comes from washing out parts of the uterine lining, same as with a 'normal' period. There is a high risk of total miscarriage for obvious reasons. It happens for a reason like having a malformed uterus. For example, mine has two compartments and they can function irregularly.

lemonginger I totally understand with a heart shaped uterus but does that mean if you have a ‘normal’ uterus then monthly significant bleeding isn’t possible? How comes so many people swear it happened then?

I can't answer that to be honest Tinyprancer after I'd booked in with my midwife the bleeding stopped altogether and nothing showed up on the scan so it kind of got brushed under the rug so to speak, baby was fine and it had stopped.

I bled on and off throughout my second trimester, actually much more blood than my (usually very heavy due to endometriosis) period, baby fine and no explanation!

Sorry posted too soon

*and I only had 12 weeks till baby was due and needed to get things in place.
It could be any number of reasons in all honesty, doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong and if you don't know you're pregnant it's easy to just put any bleeding down to it being a period
