AIBU to think the council can do something about a private speed bump?

Sorry this isn't a very good AIBU but I'm posting for traffic and hoping there are some expert or experienced mners out there who can give me some advice please.

I live in a very traffic congested town. It's got a huge amount of commuter traffic and is gridlocked for miles in every direction morning and evening. A big contributor to the general volume of traffic is a huge private office park. At least 1000 cars in and out every day. But it's not going anywhere, we're stuck with it, fine.

My gripe is the office park has just installed an absolutely viscous speed bump about 50 metres inside its driveway. It's so bad cars have to slow to 5mph to go over it so in the mornings when hundreds of cars are pouring in at peak time, it's now causing a jam back out onto the public roads. This is making a bad traffic situation worse. (I got nosy one lunchtime so went in for a drive to see what was causing the morning holdups hence now know what it is and how ridiculous the speed bump is).

I've had a look on the council planning portal and it doesn't look like it has permission so I presume it wasn't needed. AIBU to think there's something the council can do to either make them replace it with a less severe bump which would still slow traffic down (their signposted limit is 20mph) but less extreme or make them move it further up the drive inside the property and away from the public road - they have at least another 100m or drive before a roundabout.

I'm happy to contact the council, but don't know if they have any powers over this sort of thing, plus I know that if I don't know exactly what department to ask for, I'll get fobbed off.

Any advice welcome - thank you.

I doubt there's anything the council can do since it's on a private road.

You can put a speed bump on private property.

What the council is able to do, is to forbid queueing for a carpark,on a public road, so that other road users are obstructed.
Signs, yellow boxes on road, traffic wardens.

But, seldom very effective.

Sounds like negotiation between council and company to move the speed bump would work better.

May be worth getting a sympathetic councillor on your side-by-side one from the ruling party.

If it's on a private road it's unlikely the council can do anything - but it's worth checking if the road has been adopted by the council because sometimes previously private roads are. You can ask the council for this info.

It may be the case that the speed bump is required for safety reasons - perhaps the owners felt there was a legitimate danger to life due to traffic moving too fast. I'm not sure they would go to the expense of installing a speed bump unless they felt it was really necessary. It sounds like a pain for you though :(

Thanks - didn't think there was much to be done about the bump, but if they're causing congestion on the public highway, I didn't know if that was an angle. Contacting a councillor is a good idea.
