Can I get kicked out of uni for this? (Placement uniform

First year doing a healthcare degree. Having a crap time outwith uni and health wise and this is just cherry on top of the icing really.

I have to do a clinical placement in 3 weeks. Uniform provided to me is far too small for me - wont go past my shoulders. Was fitted in Nov last year and due to illness/medication I've gained weight since then. I'm a size 20/22 - one top given to me was 'extra small'.

Uni are saying they can't do much for me. Said they will contact supplier but said they highly doubt I'll be provided with anything at all. I've asked course mates, and course society, and away to email course leader but what the hell do I do? Its Scotland so one standard uniform, needs uni logo so can't just buy one from Alexandras or something. I've even checked eBay and nothing.

If I can't get uniform I can't do placement which is integral part of course, so I assume I'd fail? In which case maybe I'm better going before I'm chucked out ...

Have you offered to pay for a name uniform?

NerrSnerr · 06/03/2018 11:00

Do you know who the supplier is? Could you contact them directly?

WhatCanIDoNowPlease · 06/03/2018 11:01

That is incredibly shit and unhelpful of your uni.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 06/03/2018 11:02

Is the uni logo something like a badge or embroidery that could be sewn on to a different uniform?

Enuffsenuffsenuff · 06/03/2018 11:03

I absolutely cannot imagine you would be chucked off of the entire course for the sake of a uniform, not least because illness and medication have been determinative factors in the issue. This also can't be the first time this has happened.

To begin with, find something close enough to the uniform that it's passable. I cannot believe that they won't let you wear that at least in the short term while the issue is resolved.

Then see what your course leader says. I expect they will advise that you order a new uniform from the supplier and wear an alternative in the meantime.

There will be a solution to this and I cannot over-emphasise how absurd it would be for you to quit your course over this issue, which is a purely practical one which seems to me to have numerous possible solutions.

  1. Get similar looking completely plain uniform
  1. Cut logo off the supplied uniform
  1. Sew logo onto plain uniform.
  1. Do placement.
sashh · 06/03/2018 11:07

That's crap, what would they do if you were pregnant?

I'd try contacting the place you do your placement and ask is it OK if you wear a plain white dress, or plain tunic and trousers. Then I would buy them.

PhelanThePain · 06/03/2018 11:10

Wouldn’t you be allowed to wear a cardigan that would cover where the logo should be?

SandLand · 06/03/2018 11:11

What snowmelt says. Or maybe even take the old top and the close replacement to a school uniform embroidery place, and see if they can replicate it.

shouldnthavesaid · 06/03/2018 11:11

I'll do that, contact placement tutor. Would be more than happy to buy grey tunics online . I probably am over reacting, I'm just tired and very fed up with things and expecting the worst constantly now.

In terms of maternity I think they'd persuade you to drop out and come back later - they've told me that several times as I have a health condition, that I can come back next year if I want.

Not allowed to wear cardigans as will be based on surgical wards most of the time, so bare below the elbows etcm

I would complain to the uni, having the correct uniform is a course requirement so surely they must be able to do Something. I am a HPC and was able to get replacement studenf uniform when mine got stolen off my washing line mid placement! I think the uni are BU. If you have no joy explain the situation to your educator, you may be allowed to wear something else appropriate (I would accept my students in appropriate colour polo shirt and trousers in this situation and be having words with the uni) or find you some scrubs. I agree it doesn't give a great first impression to the placement though.

Also for future advice always order uniform a couple of sizes too big they tend to shrink in the wash!

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/03/2018 11:12

I would be contacting students union student welfare officer and get them involved. You have been ill and on long term medication they need to make reasonable adjustment so a bigger uniform and depending on your illness could be a disability discrimination.
Plus if you have not been well you need extra help to fight your corner. I take students on a healthcare setting type placement who come with uniform, but stuff happens so we don't hold them to the uniform. We sometimes make the best of it.

Charlieiscool · 06/03/2018 11:13

You need to go to the clinical placement coordinator for your course and politely explain the problem and ask for their help. Of course you must not leave because of this. One way or another you will turn up on placement with something similar to the uniform.

Remember you will be wearing an ID card showing you are a student anyway. That is what identifies you.

Why did they give you a size small in the first place, presumably you were not that size when measured up. They have to support you with this. If they don't you just turn up as close as you can with the proper ID. You would be able to appeal against a decision to fail you if they don't make it possible for you to pass.

Jjou · 06/03/2018 11:27

Go to the school/faculty office and ask to speak to the team who find the placements for students, or the team who co-ordinate the ordering of uniforms. There may be spares around, or at least someone will be able to advise you of the process of ordering a replacement.

shouldnthavesaid · 06/03/2018 11:28

I can get a couple of size 22 and 24s from Alexandras online in dark grey, not quite same but its grey at least, and trousers fit enough that I can wear them. I'm gutted. They said to get smaller size as I was losing weight rapidly, but had contraceptive implant fitted in Nov and have ballooned since with nearly 3 stone weight gain. I have emailed course coordinator and will email PEF too, I used to work alongside PEF so hopefully she can help.

RE someone fighting my corner, doesnt seem to be any of that - uni said v limited support services if anything until strikes are finished, so just (badly) muddling through just now.

'extra small' isn't going to fit many people - and frankly size 20/22 is not that unusual among healthcare staff.

the cut and sew solution seems the simplest. What a nonsense!

IrnBruTortie · 06/03/2018 11:30

Would something like this be an option?

NoMoreBabies123 · 06/03/2018 11:30

When I chucked soup all over my uniform on placement they gave me scrubs to wear.

Could you wear scrubs?

Polarbearflavour · 06/03/2018 11:31

I ordered spare dresses online for uni. They didn’t have the uni logo on but nobody ever mentioned it!

Lilymoose · 06/03/2018 11:33

Just wear scrubs for now whilst you get it sorted, there is no need to miss the placement! People wear scrubs for all sorts of reasons including waiting for uniform so don't worry.

SeeKnievelHitThe17thBus · 06/03/2018 11:35

Please be aware that the university may be working within the parameters set out by the hospital - you wouldn't expect a nurse to turn up in "good as I can get" nearly not quite uniform, and it would be the same expectation for a placement student.

That's not to say the uni shouldn't be helping you to source the appropriate size because of a health issue, but it may impact on whether you can start the placement on time if the hopsital needs you to wear the agreed uniform before you step on the wards.

PoorYorick · 06/03/2018 11:35

No way will you be the only person ever to have gained weight since ordering the uniform.

Viviennemary · 06/03/2018 11:38

That is simply ridiculous. I'd just buy the nearest I could get. Don't miss the placement because of their incompetency. I doubt you'll be sent home as it's no fault of yours.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 06/03/2018 11:39

Is the logo printed or embroidered? Have you got one of those "we print/embroidery teee shirts/hoody places" near by?

School uniform and sports shops often do this sort of thing.

Would it be posiable to take your bigger size tunic and ask them to replicate the logo? Embroidered might be an issue or more expensive.
