to be a vinyl floor snob

Pls help, I have to lay a new lounge floor (on top of a concrete floor), I previously had laminate. However I find laminate easily scratchable and slippy. Carpet right sell wood effect vinyl flooring which is quite robust but I worry people will view it as tacky. Any one had it and can let me know how they view it?

TheCatsMother44 · 06/03/2018 10:34

My parents used to have it in their kitchen and the wood effect kind of wore off in places and left it looking terrible in patches.

If you went down that route you'd need to be sure you were buying a very hard wearing one otherwise you might find you're replacing it sooner than you thought you'd need to.

borntobequiet · 06/03/2018 10:35

Keeping this going for the sake of the first reply!
You can get some very nice wood effect vinyl and it's warmer and less noisy than laminate. Go for it!

NoSquirrels · 06/03/2018 10:36

We've got it in our hall. It's alright (inherited with the house). There's a lot to like about vinyl - easy clean etc.

CombineBananaFister · 06/03/2018 10:37

We have it as it's brilliant for my son's allergies. I don't give a shiny shit if someone comes round and thinks it's tacky. It means DS can play with his toys on his floor without his skin flaring up.
If youre worried that people who come to your house are going to judge you on your flooring, you need to get nicer people around you or don't invite them Grin

Whatshallidonowpeople · 06/03/2018 10:37

Decent laminate is neither slippy nor scratchy. I mean the £30 m2 stuff though

Get the thicker version that they do, you can’t really tell the difference, you can steam mop it etc and it’s quieter. I prefer it to laminate.

RoseWhiteTips · 06/03/2018 10:40

Not in a sitting room floor - that would be odd.

Bitsandbobsalot · 06/03/2018 10:40

I have vinyl down in my current home and with kids and dogs its a bloody god send. It cleans beautifully, doesn’t mark and it doesn’t make the noises that real wood floors make. Mine was quite expensive but I’ve definitely had my money out of it and when I move next month I’ll be considering it for downstairs again. Nobody has ever said to me it looks tacky. Personally I hate the shiney look of laminate flooring. That been said a real wood floor can’t be beaten.

BlubberBlubber · 06/03/2018 10:40

Not had vinyl in the living room, but had vinyl and tiled in the kitchen. Currently redesigning the kitchen and when we rip it out think will actually go for good quality vinyl again over the current tiles.
Go for it if you like it, haven’t seen anywhere with vinyl in the lounge but can’t see why it wouldn’t work.

RoseWhiteTips · 06/03/2018 10:40

...on a sitting room floor

RoseWhiteTips · 06/03/2018 10:41

Our wooden floors are real.

CadleCrap · 06/03/2018 10:45

I have ludicrously expensive bamboo flooring in my house that I HATE! Shows every bit of fluff, foot print etc.

Due to an insurance claim I am getting the money for the bamboo, but replacing it with vinyl strips. No snobbery here.

Karndean is great. More expensive than ordinary vinyl, but if you can afford it, it's worth it. Friends have it in their hall and dining kitchen.

Fontella · 06/03/2018 10:47

I've got a grey blue vinyl flooring right through my sizeable hallway, downstairs loo and kitchen /diner and I love it. Couldn't give a shit if anyone thinks it's tacky or not.

I had a flood and all the carpets / flooring got ruined - the insurance would only cover so much and the bloke who came round suggested vinyl all the way through. At first I thought no way - but he showed me some samples and I went with one that's got a slight sparkle, stone effect to it.

It looks great, is very durable, easy to keep clean and makes the place look and feel incredibly spacious. The carpets I replaced - lounge and stairs are already looking tatty, wooden flooring elsewhere is marked and needs attention .... but the vinyl still looks pristine. I recently decorated the hall and despite putting down dust sheets everywhere, I still got some drips on the flooring. A few gentle rubs with a scourer and it was gone.

Not sure about wood effect - but the vinyl itself as a flooring material - definitely.

MagicFajita · 06/03/2018 10:49

I have vinyl in my living room and whilst I chose it because I was broke when I moved into my flat it's actually served me well.

7 years in there's no wear and it's so easy to keep clean

My dad has it in his living room. When I first heard of it I though oh no. But honestly it looks brilliant. You would never notice a difference by looking but obviously when walking on it you can tell but it does look good.

MinnieMousse · 06/03/2018 10:55

My parents have Karndean in their bathroom. I think it looks quite nice and is easier to clean than laminate. It's also much warmer on your feet. The downside for the bathroom is that I find it's quite slippy when wet.

CavoliRiscaldati · 06/03/2018 11:01

It's your house, who cares what other people think if you enjoy your home?

I prefer real wood and floor tiles for the kitchen, and I am not a fan of vinyl but I equally dislike carpets especially downstairs. I am not sure anyone would find it "tacky" though

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/03/2018 11:05

This is an insurance claim too and I’d like to use it as a chance to get rid of the slippy scratched laminate before my 7 month old starts walking. I do have to consider resale value of the home if vinyl- real wood floor defo won’t be approved as I didn’t have real wood before the claim.
There is something called LVT- but I heard it lifts off floors but like a better laminate in feel.

MrsSkeletor · 06/03/2018 11:08

I have it and I hate it. Feels cheap and nasty, but it might have been installed poorly (was done before we got the place)

HisBetterHalf · 06/03/2018 11:08

what about wood effect tiles, some are really good
