“You really are some sort of girl aren’t you!”

As PP have said I think it was probably admiringly/complimentary.

Shedmicehugh · 05/03/2018 23:41

It’s a bit like saying ‘you are a one’ or ‘you are a right card’ kind of thing. Is he a bit of a cockney?

HelpWasabi · 05/03/2018 23:41

Sorry I realise I sound like the most basic person around, nachos, blah blah... I’m not! Grin It was a reference to a joke made on last date

Depends on context - which I can't tell from your posts so far.

"You really are some sort of girl" - in admiration at something marvellous you're describing - said in awe - cool.

Or could be he's a twat and using it disparagingly.

If you have to ask, it's probably not good...

Shedmicehugh · 05/03/2018 23:43

He finds you witty

HelpWasabi · 05/03/2018 23:46

Shedmice you’re probably taking the piss but I’ll take it anyway...

In fact I'd go as far to say that tone is as important as context.

It could be sneering, it could be ingratiating, it could be awkward (as in trying to sound cool/worldly).

Only you can know which is which. If its a new relationship and something stands out, I would use my senses to gather instances, context and tone and make a decision after certain amount of time if he's a keeper or a "see you never" Smile Ingratiating men can, for example often have their own agenda, lavishing compliments and making you feel like some sort of ass-kicking Superwoman whilst simultaneously make you dependant on their praise. You need to get a good genuine-ometer radar going.

“You really are some sort of girl aren’t you!”

I'd have to ask what he meant! Grin
"Aw, thanks. What kind of girl is that, then?"
'Cos I'd be baffled if that's all he came out with!

Shedmicehugh · 05/03/2018 23:53

I’m not!! That would be my interpretation. He found your comments witty, amusing etc

TheDowagerCuntess · 06/03/2018 00:29

It's clearly a compliment in this context.

I don't understand the confusion.

iheartmichellemallon · 06/03/2018 00:35

Sounds like a flirty compliment to me, given the context as you've posted it.

tumblrpigeon · 06/03/2018 01:08

Compliment if said to a fat Scottish bird

Obi1Kenobi · 06/03/2018 01:12

If you are reading this much into a passing comment you are DESPERATE. Step back, slap yourself, redeem your self confidence and stop dating for a while. Jesus!

BitOfFun · 06/03/2018 01:13

In the context you describe, it's definitely intended as a compliment. Like "Wow, you're really something!"

BitOfFun · 06/03/2018 01:18

Oh, and I'd ignore the derogatory comments posted before you made the context clear. It's just a fun comment in the situation, along the lines of "hey, you're my dream come true!"

gillybeanz · 06/03/2018 01:21

it's the political correct way to say You're one of the lads Grin
You can hold your own
i'd take it as a compliment.

Apollo440 · 06/03/2018 01:23

It's a bloke compliment and it means you are someone to be reckoned with not to be dismissed lightly (be it drinking, bull wrestling or whatever). No need to overthink it.

LilQueenie · 06/03/2018 01:27

was he quoting a line from The Young Ones. My first thought.

ColinsVeryJolly · 06/03/2018 01:32

was he quoting a line from The Young Ones. My first thought.

It's from Bottom but yeah it's a quote. DH uses it to me all the time

"Stop wibbling on like some sort of girl who's trying to have her period" is the full line I think Grin

LilQueenie · 06/03/2018 01:40

thats it. they re use lines from all their shows I forget which ones. Grin

1forAll74 · 06/03/2018 02:00

I think it was a compliment I have had that said to me when I was much much younger, in the days when there were no stupid issues between men and women. The first time a guy said that to me, I fixed his motor bike for him when he was not able to fix it himself, and then for the same guy, I put a shelf up for him in his little shed as he was a bit naff at diy.

Earthmover · 06/03/2018 02:18

It's like 'hey girl' but with a double helping of cheese on top.
I'd imagine he struggles through life as a result. Much piss taking from his colleagues etc etc
Just bell end material.

TheDailyMailIsADisgustingRag · 06/03/2018 02:26

In NI I think this would be a compliment, especially in the country. Along with, “you’re a quare girl”. Another one is “go on ye girl ye”, which people say as encouragement.

KC225 · 06/03/2018 02:42

Is he Bertie Wooster?
