That's amazing. Now my allergies seem to be acting up!

Tobebythesea · 05/03/2018 17:54

That’s made me cry. Well done Sainsburys.

jaseyraex · 05/03/2018 17:55

Oh I read this earlier and it made me have a good cry! So lovely. I hope more businesses do things like this.

Curtainshopping · 05/03/2018 17:56

Good in the world after all?

There’s loads of good in the world, most people are good!

NothingisForgotten · 05/03/2018 17:58

I’ve just read this. Had an emotional day as we have just come to the decision my Mam can no longer look after my Dad who has dementia. So I’ve been phoning care homes and social work so to read that hit a nerve but was so lovely.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 05/03/2018 18:01

Unlike the local co op to me who accused my mum of shoplifting as she had already been into our local Sainsbury's to buy cat food and then went into the co op to buy more. (Forgetting she had bought some already).
She was clearly suffering from some sort of dementia but not enough to be in a care home at that point.
They could tell there was something wrong and they bullied her.
I only found out about this because my neighbour worked in the co op and told me.

Fabulous work Sainsbury's.

veuveo · 05/03/2018 18:01

Aw!!

Rosamund1 · 05/03/2018 18:03

I’m doing my next shop at Sainsbury’s.

Bluelady · 05/03/2018 18:05

Amazing.

CakeOfThePan · 05/03/2018 18:15

Just had a little sob, thats lovely. As a family touched by dementia this is lovely to read. The loss of self worth, and feeling of being 'needed' and having a 'purpose' is huge, id imagine more so in someone so young. Well done sainsburys.

nothingisforgotten Flowers that call is hard, really hard. But your mam will go back to being his wife not his carer. Make sure you keep her busy as the loss of routine is really hard when they first go in.

loveyouradvice · 05/03/2018 18:18

What a great post - thank you OP!

NothingisForgotten · 05/03/2018 18:48

Thank you @cakeofthepan. I’ve been in tears most of the day. I was never going to put either of my parents into care but the last few months has seen a big decline and I live a 3hr drive away so it’s been difficult Sad

MrsFrankDrebin · 05/03/2018 20:16

I can also vouch for Sainsburys being very understanding. My mum worked for them part-time (after retirement age - she was bored!) for over 10 years. Unfortunately, several years ago she was diagnosed with Parkinson's. However, the branch at which she worked allowed her to continue working, within her limits, until she decided it was time to call it a day on her own terms. Her ex-colleagues still invite her out, although now my mum is often too unwell to take them up on the offer.

But I just wanted to add my bit to say that Sainsburys do seem to be one of the 'good guys' with things like this.

NewMinouMinou · 05/03/2018 21:08

Yup.
I’ll never forget walking into the cafe area in our local Sainsbury’s to breastfeed my three-day-old daughter.
I explained that I wasn’t going to buy any food or drink, but I just wanted to sit in a secluded corner for a few mins.
A couple of minutes later, the waitress appeared with a cup of water and a biscuit.

Almost nine years ago now, but that small act of kindness has stayed with me!

CakeOfThePan · 05/03/2018 22:35

nothingisforgotten it’s not an easy decision at all, I’d imagine with the distance it’s even harder as I bet your mum doesn’t share the half of it, you probably feel guilty at not being able to do more. It must be utterly exhausting for you all. I know you only hear the bad about care homes but the three I have personal experience of have been lovely and made it so much easier (2 council one private) the staff were wonderful.

Dementia is truly a bastard
