Walking out of Tesco and a lady (70s maybe )is in front.
She walks out and the alarm goes off,I stop thinking she’s going to stop but she doesn’t.
I continue to walk out.
Then a man taps me on the shoulder and says “come here”
I say “why”
He says “the alarm has just gone off”
I said ..” I know the lady in front triggered it” and pointed to her.
He says “come here”
I walk back in the shop and put me bags through the security alarms and shock no beep.
It was the lady in front...
He doesn’t even apologise just says
“Ok”
Everyone was watching
Why not stop her?

He thought it was you.

letsdolunch321 · 05/03/2018 16:41

I would have demanded an apology.

Who does the cheeky twat think he is !!!!

Ssloulou · 05/03/2018 16:42

I was so embarrassed.
Hope he felt like a Twit when he realised it wasn’t me.

He made a mistake. Sometimes with lots of people walking through you can't tell who it is. He thought it was you. No biggie.

mollied · 05/03/2018 16:43

He probably did and thats why he didn't apologise

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 05/03/2018 16:45

Who does the cheeky twat think he is!!!!

Presumably a paid security guard employed to do just this...Hmm

Ssloulou · 05/03/2018 16:49

I pointed to the lady who actually caused the alarm but he wasn’t interested.
Clearly I look more like a thief than her.
Those things are temperamental anyway

@letsdolunch321
Who does the cheeky twat think he is !!!!

Someone employed to do exactly what he did.

You'll live though, eh? Annoyed, yeah? But so what? Biscuit

lornathewizzard · 05/03/2018 16:50

Tbf to him, it must be pretty common for actual shoplifters to deny it was the too...

lornathewizzard · 05/03/2018 16:50

*them

Ssloulou · 05/03/2018 16:51

He ain’t doing his job very well then ....

OP posts:
Idontdowindows · 05/03/2018 16:52

I don't listen to security. They can call the police if they think I've stolen something. Then again, where I live all they have is their badge and no rights to stop or detain you.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 05/03/2018 16:54

I’m sure lots of shoplifters point out that it was others that set the alarm off. As far as he was concerned it was you going through which set it off.

saoirsesoige · 05/03/2018 16:54

Who does the cheeky twat think he is!!!!

He thinks he's a security guard doing his job?

Beanteam · 05/03/2018 16:56

I bought stuff in a station M&S it was put into a M&S carrier bag and I refused the receipt as I was walking straight out. I took out a biscuit as I walked to the door and unwrapped the end and took. bite out of it and this twerp security guy stopped and asked if I’d paid for it. Where did I get the biscuit? At first I thought he was asking cos he wanted to buy one. I said I’d just bought it at the counter, he got quite stroppy, I said I’d bought it along with all the other stuff, veg, cake etc in the new carrier bag. He was reallyarsey - so I got arsey back, I mean I had the bag in my hand. Why would I steal one biscuit - I left but will make sure I get receipt in future.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 05/03/2018 17:00

What’s the issue? People that were looking will be able to see you didn’t steal anything.

itstimeforanamechange · 05/03/2018 17:20

The issue is that the OP was being accused of something she didn't do. TBH if it had been me, I'd just have said "she set it off" and carried on walking out. We're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty but it doesn't seem to work that way. Why should the OP have to prove it wasn't her?

And the receipt thing at M&S annoys me. Fine to not want to waste paper, I do get that, but it does worry me that someone will have a nasty experience with a security guard unless CCTV is viewed or they can check the audit roll on the till. And how long would it take for an officious security guard to agree to do that?

maygirl27 · 05/03/2018 17:22

Unfortunately this is quite a common occurance, OP. I agree with other posters who say that he's only doing his job, however it wouldn't have been too much to expect an apology from him for dragging you back when it wasn't you who triggered the alarm.

Bluntness100 · 05/03/2018 17:25

Yes this is embarrassing. I once bought a pair of trousers in house of Fraser, the cashier woman left the electronic tag on. I don't know how but I walked out thr store with no alarm going off. Realised when I got home it was still on. Was so fucked off and had to go all the way back.

And yes you guessed it, the friggen alarm went off as I went back in. Two security guards, searched my bags, checked my receipt, people staring.

I'd be pissed off if I was you too. However I guess theives always say it wasn't me, it was the person in front.. Sigh.

headintheproverbial · 05/03/2018 17:29

Don't you think many genuine thieves say: 'it wasn't me, it was the person in front'. He thought it was you, it's no big deal!!

64BooLane · 05/03/2018 17:30

I wouldn’t mind this at all. Why would it be embarrassing? Anyone who was interested enough to stop and look at you being checked would also have seen you walk away afterwards, clearly not a thief. Everyone knows shop alarms can be triggered in error.

64BooLane · 05/03/2018 17:32

What happened to Bluntness would piss me off though - having to traipse back.

Thistlebelle · 05/03/2018 17:33

I wouldn’t have been annoyed or embarrassed the man us just doing his job.

He made a mistake it happens.

I’d have been mildly peeved at best.

BellyBean · 05/03/2018 17:37

A simple thanks for your patience would go a long way with me, yes he's just doing his job but courtesy helps.

Tainbri · 05/03/2018 17:53

He was doing his job but there was absolutely no call for him not to have apologised for stopping you and thanking you for cop-orating etc. It's manners. Very unnerving and embarrassing when you're innocent and he behaved badly.
