To ask if you run a business from home...

NomsQualityStreets · 05/03/2018 13:10

what do you do?

I'm soon going to be a SAHM once my maternity finishes. It makes sense for us as my wage wouldn't even cover half of the childcare cost if I was to return to my old job.

I've been wondering if I'm able to do something from home that can bring in a bit of an income to help our finances but I don't really know if/what I could do.

I tutor.

acquiesce · 05/03/2018 13:25

Your OP is just ASKING for MLM hunbots to reply ‘I have my own business hun, work from home around the kids, PM me if you want more details!’

Grin

In the real world, what skill sets do you have? You could tutor, proofread, have a look if your old job has any work that needs doing from home?
I am also a SAHM and would like to earn some income from home but unfortunately I hadn’t found my niche just yet! Good luck, hope you find something!

NomsQualityStreets · 05/03/2018 13:31

@acquiesce oh dear you're right I didn't realise Grin

Just throwing it out there I'm NOT interested in any MLM!

Unfortunately no work from home opportunities at my old job. Don't have any particular skills but I am bilingual.

DailyMailareDicks · 05/03/2018 13:38

Can I just ask what the difference is between MLM and a genuine franchise opportunity? How do you spot the difference?

princesspeach21 · 05/03/2018 13:39

I buy things and re-sell them online, I specialise in several different areas but all are fashion/beauty related :)

SmashedMug · 05/03/2018 13:41

MLM: you buy an expensive kit. The people on the level above profit from you buying that kit. You don't make any sales. You recruit people and get them to buy an expensive kit. You profit off them purchasing the kit. And so on. Like a pyramid...

Franchise: you actually make money through the name you're paying to use by selling to actual customers.

Pinkponiesrock · 05/03/2018 13:44

I’m a farmer, not really an option accessible to everyone though.

acquiesce · 05/03/2018 13:48

Actual franchise owners (think papa johns, McDonald’s) don’t sell on Facebook, or guilt trip their mum into buying a £40 mascara

FilledSoda · 05/03/2018 13:48

I'm a childminder.
You can make a decent wage but there are drawbacks obviously.
Do you like other people's kids ?

mishfish · 05/03/2018 13:49

Bookkeeping, but I do need my children to go to nursery a few days a week as it’s not something I can do when they’re around

Girlsworld92 · 05/03/2018 13:50

Childminder here too. It's decent money but you do work hard for it 😀

lemony7 · 05/03/2018 13:55

I’m a proofreader and copy-editor. It takes a lot of training though and isn’t as easy as most people think.

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 05/03/2018 14:04

Web design and digital marketing. I can't really do it with the children around though - they're at school now but they used to go to nursery/childminder/nanny would look after them after school.

But I choose my own hours mostly and I can cut down during holidays, so it's pretty family friendly.

Being bilingual, could you offer small conversation classes in your other language? Or home tuition? Or translation services?

snapperstickers68 · 05/03/2018 14:12

Hmm that's outed me hasn't it Sad Can someone report my post above please for that reason. Thankyou Flowers

athingthateveryoneneeds · 05/03/2018 14:13

I ran a catering business for a while. Admin and organisation stuff.in the day, and attending events at the weekends. It was fine when DH worked nearby but when he changed jobs with longer hours I couldn't manage on my own.

I also did a bit of sewing for money but spent the profits on more fabric for me so it wasn't sustainable.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 05/03/2018 14:13

I’m a travel agent Smile

PrincessFudge · 05/03/2018 14:15

Reported for you @snapperstickers68 Smile

QuizzlyBear · 05/03/2018 14:16

@lemony7 do you mind if I ask how you got into proofreading / copy editing? Is it through an agency? I'm a qualified marketing manager but I'm taking a career break to write a novel. I could do with making some money from home in the meantime and do have years of experience! TIA

k2p2k2tog · 05/03/2018 14:20

Freelance writing.

SevenOf1981 · 05/03/2018 14:21

I have a PT job in London that I spend too much money travelling to. My friend has a v successful online business and she asked if I'd like to do some VA work for her.
If you've PA'd in your life at some point, consider being a virtual assistant.
Also, have a look at Upwork. Where lots of freelancers/working from home people advertise their business. You could get some inspiration from there.

KevinTheYuccaPlant · 05/03/2018 14:24

You have an absolutely wonderful opportunity there to offer translation as well as transcription and localisation services from your other language to English. (Localisation, if you've not come across it, is editing text translated either by machine or a second language speaker so that it reads as if it was written by a native speaker).

I'm a transcriber and also do a bit of matched betting and football trading.
