Panic buyers

Aibu to think that it's damn ridiculous the way people have been panic buying?
Personally I think that all the supermarkets should take a leaf out of our co ops book and allow one 6 pint per person! Yes it caused a few rows but surely that is the fair way when stocks are running low.
It's always milk and bread, some people are so selfish and buy ridiculous amounts of the stuff.
It drives me mad.

I’m the same Trapped. My DC think I’m nuts.

TrappedInSpace · 05/03/2018 11:43

Adora I haven't even started on the tins tbh. Used some long life custard, baked some bread (the flour had been in the freezer for 18 months, it was time to go tbh.) Still ready for what Brexit throws at us!

Hillingdon · 05/03/2018 11:44

So - to the PP saying stuff everyone else, I want to buy what I want to buy. I bet you are most pleasant in real life. I love fresh bread. My DH could toast a loaf a week old and still be happy. In the last few days I have had to be more creative. An apple or a banana or some cereal if there is no bread is not the end of the world.

And words fail me re the teenager drinking 32 pints. Totally totally selfish

Jux · 05/03/2018 11:48

We had no milk for a short while - I was a bit upset as black tea is not nice. We were very low on bread too so I left what there was for dd. Nowhere in our town had milk, some shops because the delivery vans couldn't get through, some shops because people had bought it all. I couldn't walk to the shops and my mobility scooter was snowed in, so I had to rely on dh. He said there was only "soya milk and stuff like that", in a faintly disgusted way; I know he'd never consider getting it.

We got some longlife skimmed and some Marvel. The soya milk would have been better tbh!

Two days later it all started thawing, helped by rain, and there was milk in the shops again. I could have survived on black tea for a couple of days of course, (you get used to anything!) but I didn't have to.

Yes, we are. When you go shopping, do you always consider who else might come along after you and need stuff? Of course you don't. You don't say ooh theres only one bunch of bananas left, I'll leave them to for the next person to have, I'm so nice.

You're being ridiculous. You might have a point if someone is clearing shelves, but if they are merely buying what they need for their family the same way you do every time you go shopping, you're just being nasty to normal people.

Idliketoteachtheworldtosing1 · 05/03/2018 11:58

It is completely different when you know stocks are low, I'm sorry that is just selfish and that's why shops limited what each person could buy.

saoirsesoige · 05/03/2018 11:59

No it isn't. I shouldn't have enough milk for my children just in case you come in after me?

sayhellotothelittlefella · 05/03/2018 12:00

I must look like I’m panic buying every time I buy bread and milk. We go through at least 12 pints a day so I buy about 30 odd pints at a time. And over a loaf of bread a day too. Luckily I stocked up on Tuesday on account of the fact I’d seen a weather forecast or two.

Goldmandra · 05/03/2018 12:01

Wow!

This passed me by completely!

I have a 4 x 4 and nipped into Waitrose in our nearest city on Friday to pick up a couple of things for a friend who couldn't get out of the village. The shelves were stacked normally and it was very quiet, as were the roads.

I also popped into our village shop for eggs on Saturday and there was no sign of panic buying there either.

The snowdrifts made quite a lot of the local area impassable without a 4 x 4 but nobody seemed to be panicking here.

Was this a city thing?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/03/2018 12:02

Yanbu OP. Dh saw people squabbling over bread at Tesco last week! We didn't buy anything above we normally buy and it wasn't an issue.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 05/03/2018 12:03

Still no milk in Tesco this morning apart from the last few bottles of skimmed which no one seemed to want. Surprised because roads have been clear since Friday.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/03/2018 12:18

That is strange. Our Tesco is pretty much back to normal now. The crazy bread people will be pleased no doubt Grin

Takeaweeseat · 05/03/2018 12:18

No it isn't. I shouldn't have enough milk for my children just in case you come in after me?

Why what's going to happen to your children if they don't drink milk for a few days? So is it just everybody else's kids that should go without? You do indeed have a selfish attitude, as long as you and yours are ok fuck everybody else.

TrappedInSpace · 05/03/2018 12:21

Some farms have not been able to get their milk out and have been forced to throw it away.

saoirsesoige · 05/03/2018 12:22

Actually yes, I have a SN child that eats very little and needs his milk quit badly.
It's my job to feed my children, not worry about yours. You have a very strange attitude to your children if you care more about imaginary other peoples kids than your own. It's not selfish, its good parenting!

Countrygirl94 · 05/03/2018 12:32

What bothered me was that people living in rural parts out in the country who couldn't get into the shops until roads had been cleared much later after sometimes being stuck for days (like my parents and in-laws) to find shelves empty of basics with the risk of them not getting back to shops for days.
Personally i think living in town you don't need to buy more, you'll easily survive and be able to get as soon as delivers get through, however those in the countryside can't and I think you have to think about those people when your buying your 20 pints of milk and 6 loafs of bread when really you only need 1.

popcornpaws · 05/03/2018 12:32

We only drink uht milk and buy a couple of case at a time, theres always loads in the shops as people think its shite.
This week there was no uht, no almond, soya etc, no marvel, coffee mate, no fresh, in the shop i work we were even selling out of those packets of cappuccino coffee!

givemesteel · 05/03/2018 12:44

Lol at the teenager drinking 32 bottles of milk whilst off from school for 3 days Grin I assume he didn't guzzle it all himself!

Hoping that those who saw people with dozens of bottles of milk were picking them up on behalf of relatives or neighbours. Apart from anything else how do people have space in their fridge for all this extra milk? Ive got a large American style Fridge but wouldn't have space for all this extra food... Do people have a spare 'armegeddon' fridge in their garage just in case?

SteamyBeignets · 05/03/2018 12:46

Wish the selfish people here would post their real names so when they or their kids desperately need help we can all ignore them because it is not our job to take care of other peoples' kids.

SteamyBeignets · 05/03/2018 12:48

If that 32 bottles of milk teenager were my son, he would get a good telling off for being selfish if he had drunk all the milk in the house in the circumstances.

I am sure all of those with the “I’m alright Jack” attitude wouldn’t have complained at all if everyone else had managed out to the shops before them and panic bought all the bread and milk Hmm

madein1995 · 05/03/2018 12:52

I agree. I think in regard to milk especially supermarkets should keep some blue top milk back, and give it to parents with young children. I've served many mums and dads this week who were worried as there was no milk for their kids - and you had adults/older adults buying pints and pints. Adults can do without, it's not fair on kids to expect them to

Hillingdon · 05/03/2018 12:54

They would have come on here whining and moaning that 'selfish' people had nabbed all the milk and bread.

Do they honestly not see that if we all had their attitude there would be nothing left at all, no sharing, just people stock piling or thinking that rationing couldn't possible apply to them because of this, that and other.

Anyway most don't have that sort of attitude to faith in humans has been restored.
