Is wiping down tables not a thing anymore?

More often than not, I find the tables in coffee shops are covered in crumbs. Tables in venues which bill themselves as fancy "gastropubs" are always sticky.

Is it just me, or has this phenomenon gotten worse over the years?

Places like Costa are the worst. I sat down at the only free table in our local Costa the other day and politely asked the waitress if she would clear it for us. She did but then we had to ask again to have it wiped.

It really puts me off going to places like this.

I hate dirty, sticky menus. Puts me right off, along with unwiped tables.

yes, I HATE grotty menus. Just vile. Why bother going to the trouble of laminating them if you're never going to clean them.

I'm actually really glad to find that I'm not the only one bothered by all this.

I hate staff who come to clear the table next to me and proceed to spray the table with cleaner and then wipe it down. No need for them to do this, spray the cloth if necessary, but not so that it carries over to my table.

I use a baby wipe for this, and just clean it myself.
I ask for a clean menu.

I never leave a tip if the menu, loo or tables are filthy, or if the waitpersons hands are dirty.

Sticky floors and chairs are disgusting too.

In fact, I’ll just order a coffee to go if the place is minging

Some places seem to think it's not something they need to do. That said, I have been for coffee somewhere today where the owner is constantly cleaning, sweeping up and clearing tables - I love it!

It's evidence of such low standards. I hate grotty tables. Every coffee shop I go in seems to have every table covered in crumbs and the last person's cups. Grrr.

God yes. I refuse to go in Wetherspoons any more. It's utterly filthy whenever you go in. Our Starbucks is almost as bad and it doesn't have the excuse of being cheap.

Willow2017 · 04/03/2018 20:36

Ours are ckeared and cleaned as soon as tbe petson leaves the table. Woe betide us if boss sees an uncleared unwiped table. Salts and peppers and sugar bowl are wiped too.
My local cafe always wipe the tables too.

But yes the place could have just emptied after the lunch rush and someone will come in and sit at the only table we have not got to yet and still covered in dishes no matter where the table is. Drives us nuts.

Oops forgot the menues are done too. And we regularly do underneath tables and wash the chairs too if its quiet. Boss is obsessed with cleaning!
