To ask about pocket money?

DS(7) wants pocket money. I’m all for it in principle, but have no idea how much he should get and what he should be expected/allowed to spend it on.
Eg at the moment all three DC are allowed ice-cream on Saturday. Should it be acceptable to spend pocket money on ice cream another day? Should we still buy his weekly ice cream, or is that now his choice?
And what about the DTs(5)? Do they get pocket money too? Less or the same?
And then the vexed question of chores for pocket money?
Please help me, MN sages.

We give my SS pocket money every week and let him choose what he spends it on. If it's something that needs paying by card he gives us the money from his purse, so he's aware of how much things are, how much he will be left with etc. He values money now, in terms of little, and big spends. It's working really well. He has a bank account too, and is saving up. A few pound a week, for helping with age appropriate tasks is plenty, Imo.

We started giving our dds pocket money around this age. They got £2.50 a week and they were expected to use it for comics, sweets, all that landfill crap like moshi monsters that was all the rage back then (ours are now 14 and 10). They also used it for spending money on school trips when they want to buy tat in the gift shops.

When they realised they had to budget for the crap luxuries they wanted it certainly sharpened up their spending habits.

We don't tie the pocket money in with household chores - we think they should be doing them regardless as a member of the household. If they want extra cash ours can earn it by washing the car or raking the leaves etc. I would still carry on buying the the ice cream for your ds but perhaps tie this in with a tidy bedroom or getting homework done rather than as a condition of getting the pocket money.
