AIBU - To expect my neighbours kids not to throw their fag butts over our fence?

We don't smoke, and my DH has just watched them throw the cigarette end over the fence. We have already spoken to the parents about this (this is not the first time....), and on challenging the kids they had the nerve to deny it (with lighter and fag packet in hand). Any suggestions?

save as many as you can and put them in a jar of water, then throw that over

Hillls · 04/05/2007 21:12

Snap! I am getting this too you are not alone, I get food too

VeniVidiVickiQV · 04/05/2007 21:13

We have this. Unfortunately the parents are even more ignorant than the children so no hope of getting a reasonable response if we brought it up.

We've started lobbing them back over. Along with snails, slugs, etc...

Food Poor you. At least fag ends don't rot and go smelly.

No you're not.

Don't really know what advice to give, having savages as neighbours is just one big morass of agonising diplomacy and wondering whether it is easier to just hire a hitman to maintain good neighbourly relations.

Hillls · 04/05/2007 21:18

Its so dangerous too, I worry about my dd's playing and getting hit by one. we got scotch eggs trown over and my dd is anaphylactic (allergic to egg).

DrippingLizzie · 04/05/2007 21:20

Filthy, disrespectful bastards. I'd chuck over some household by-products of your own, perhaps soiled nappies (that's if you've got babies - if not, take a dump in them yourself) or used condoms. Let me know if it does the trick.

NeverEndingPileOfLaundry · 04/05/2007 21:22

I'd be terrified rather than worried, if my DD was that allergic to something. May it never ever ever happen to you.

It is such a shame - all our other neighbours are so so lovely, we all look out for each other. Then they moved in last year and spoiled it all.

DH has already suggested nappy contents - DD very little (3 months) so would be the runny breastfed poo..... The thought of it makes me feel better but really couldn't go through with it in reality.

I would really counsel against throwing stuff back. (I know it may be a joke...)

Generally, savages have more stamina than normal people when it comes to this sort of low-level war of attrition. And teenagers are very bloody minded and don't care if you throw stuff in their garden - they're not going to be the ones to clean it up.

I would just throw them back and mention it to their parents again. Politely, sympathetically in a "I know teenagers are nightmares, I'm not looking forward to it" type way. And invite them over next time you have an event in the garden like a barbecue. If it gets too bad, then approach a local mediation service. But neighbour wars are only for loonies, tbh.

GiantSquirrelSpotter · 04/05/2007 21:27

LOL at the poo

NeverEndingPileOfLaundry · 04/05/2007 21:31

Thanks - we will speak to the parents again tomorrow when we have calmed down a bit. You are right, teenagers can be a mare, we have this all to come

nepol - a friend of mine had a similar problem - asked until she was blue in the face, didn't work, so she saved endless fag ends in a bucket - then when the bucket was full she threw the lot back over the fence. Problem solved and it's never been discussed since
