To think it is time for full on Mumsnet war on this, delays to proposed changes to protect victims of domestic violence

We seem to be living is an odd time for women's rights. The me too movement has shone a light on the chronic abuse that exists in some high profile occupations and will hopefully change that forever which is fantastic. But it doesn't begin to touch the place where the majority of abuse occurs, the home.

The Tory Manifesto had multiple pledges on tackling domestic violence, including a new victims bill of rights, which would for example stop victims from being cross examined by their partners.

This has all been shelved.

Just to illustrate how much this is needed. This is a case local to me. Husband abused wife and children weekly over the course of a 47 year marriage. In the final incident, he beat her for asking him to clear up some crumbs. He kicked her as she lay on the floor and broke her hip. He refused to call an ambulance even as she begged.

He got 14 months.

So Mumsnet, what can we do to individually and collectively to get the government to at least meet the obligations of their own manifesto.

Not surprised by this. The Tories have never supported women. However, currently victims of DV are not cross examined by their abuser.

I am bumping this Inthe hope the lack of interest was due to early morning post.

I don't know what we can do. More needs to be done about courts granting visitation to fathers who have abused the children's mothers.

Belleende · 04/03/2018 12:55

Agreed, if a person has abused their partner, then I do think there is a case for additional protection for any children.

That’s very worrying Bellende .
A lifetime of horror for all of the people who had the misfortune to live with this bully.

The sentence is on a par with a drunken fistfight gone wrong.

There have been a few welcome changes but they don’t go far enough.

victims from being cross examined by their partners

What do you mean? When are victims cross examined by their partners? Surely that is something only prosecution and defence lawyers do and is a necessary part of our justice system?

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/03/2018 09:55

If they can't afford a solicitor they self represent and so can and do cross examine their victims. In civil matters at any rate.
