To ask for advice on Women in Business society?

Hi everyone,

Appreciate this may not be a typical post for Mumsnet but I figured there must be a whole load of lovely women on here who have a wide array of career experience and so on.

I'm applying to be part of a Women in Business society at my university, specifically for a sponsorship officer role. It involves working with companies that partner with the society, generally giving the society money in return for promotion of events, help delivering messages to the students etc.

I have an interview coming up and the invite I received said it would focus mainly on my ideas for the society. I have a couple of suggestions of my own, namely increasing the variety of the sponsors (seems mostly banks and consulting firms at the moment) as well as establishing better links with alumni at the sponsor firms.

Could I possibly ask for suggestions on anything you felt would have been beneficial to your career (or just made your life easier) when you were at university/school/in the early stages of your career? It'd be great to get the perspective of people who have been in this situation and can now reflect on what helped and what didn't.

Obviously I need to show some motivation to the sponsorship role itself, but general ideas are most welcome too! The society is not limited by career paths so everything is welcome, from finance to journalism.

Thank you so so much!

Hey OP, hope the interview goes well! Sounds like a great society to have.

One thing I would have liked to have had available when I was in that position is mock assessment centres or interview practice etc. Men tend to be more arrogant confident in these situations and I think women often come out worse off since they are more conservative. Perhaps you could see if sponsor firms would be willing to come to your university and hold them, it'd be a good way to link this to the sponsorship role.

Best of luck!
