caffenero charges extra 10p on decaffeinated coffee called a pregnancy tax.

I think if you are drinking above the levels of caffiene deemed ‘safe’ in pregnancy at any time then you have bigger issues than paying an extra 10p for your hot beverage!

lanbro · 03/03/2018 18:47

Well I've got a coffee shop and don't charge extra for decaf, but I do charge extra for things that cost more otherwise I wouldn't be in business long!

I'm surprised Costa bother but equally surprised that anyone would be that arsed over 10p. I drank regular tea and coffee when pregnant but not to excess. Each to their own but not worthy of a sad face story imo

IvorHughJarrs · 03/03/2018 18:47

I saw this earlier and thought what bollocks!

Decaff coffee costs more due to the extra processing required so it is understandable that it might cost more and there are loads of people who drink it who are not pregnant.

I wonder if this is even a genuine story because who would bother to complain for the sake of 10p?!

Quickerthanavicar · 03/03/2018 18:48

You seem to have posted something from the Daily Mail, this is obviously some kind of error.

Fortybingowings · 03/03/2018 18:48

If that’s all she’s got into be “furious” about then she’s leading a charmed life.

Somerford · 03/03/2018 18:51

"Pregnancy tax" indeed. What a berk.

opionated · 03/03/2018 18:55

anyhow many non pregnant women have decaff i do

Bambamber · 03/03/2018 18:57

But surely it's not just expectant mums that drink it?

DalekDalekDalek · 03/03/2018 19:00

I'm not clicking on the link to open the article so I'm basing my comment on the title only.

Decaff costs more to produce therefore it is reasonable for more to be charged for it.

Whoever is the victim moaning idiot in this article needs to get a grip.

Andromeida29 · 03/03/2018 19:02

I have an issue with caffeine so pay the extra 10p. I'd rather that than have the very unpleasant side effects. Not pregnant (yet) but have no issue with this charge.

Fekko · 03/03/2018 19:03

Or go to pret - when I was pregnant I switched my usual coffe on the way to work for a decaf and most day got a feee cuppa from the lovely staff near my office.

Bluelady · 03/03/2018 19:04

I won't click on a link to the Mail but if they're charging more for decaff, they're greedy bastards. In the quantities they buy coffee if there is a price difference it must be about 0.0000001p per cup.

donquixotedelamancha · 03/03/2018 19:05

Well, she's not exactly adding value to humanity with her attention seeking, but she's not daft. She runs a parenting website so the fake outrage is just to generate some free publicity.

I assume the next thing she'll do is post about the article on more successful parenting websites. You know, MN is quite a successful parenting website.

No they really don't. They charge an extra 10p because the coffee costs more, that's a business decision. They absolutely do not call it a pregnancy tax. That's the complainers trying to create outrage.

italiancortado · 03/03/2018 19:05

They don't. It's cafe Nero.

sonyaya · 03/03/2018 19:06

I’m pregnant and only drink decaf. Can’t imagine complaining about this, you don’t have to go there. If you don’t like it go to Starbucks or Pret where decaf is the same price.

This story makes my head hurt. Firstly plenty of non pregnant people drink decaf for various reasons so it is not just affecting pregnant folk. Secondly last time I was in Nero they offered a variety of low\un caffeinated drinks so they could also drink something else. Lastly it is not like caffe Nero is the only coffee chain in the country, if they don't like it then walk the five feet or so to other coffee shop (unless caffe Nero has got sinister recently and started kidnapping pregnant women from the street and forcing them to buy decaf). If you are desperate for a caffe Nero hit one cup of full caff is probably under the 200mg limit anyway.

Laughing a bit at the suggestion up thread that we should all drink under the pregnancy limit anyway if we aren't pregnant. Any scientific rationale for that? Mainlining red bulls all-day isn't a good idea but I think I can cope with 2-3 cups of coffee spread out over a day

SockMobster · 03/03/2018 19:26

Shit, I pay coeliac and lactose free tax every single time I eat out, not just for the 9 months of pregnancy.

What a joke.

Somerford · 03/03/2018 19:33

Oh right. She's a genius then. Sign me up.

I didn't think it was your opinion.

Witchend · 03/03/2018 19:40

DH prefers decaffeinated. I shall enjoy telling him he's paying a pregnancy tax.Grin

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/03/2018 19:43

My DH drinks decaf coffee as he is one of a small proportion of the population that gets palpitations from a hit of caffeine. I can assure you he has never been pregnant, so it’s not a ‘pregnancy tax’

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 03/03/2018 19:43

(And I purposely didn’t click the DF link)
