To contact my flatmate’s parents

I am currently owed over £150 in bills by my flatmate, who has been staying at her parents for the last week. This might not seem like a lot, but for a student this will end up impacting on me buying food/paying rent in the next few weeks.

She’s been ignoring my messages, and hasn’t said when she’ll be returning to our flat. It would be unfair to ask my other flatmates to contribute the portion of the bills she owes.

Am I being unreasonable to contact her parents in the next few days if she still won’t pay?

Have you discussed with the others in the flat? Could anyone else contact her directly? Is it that the gas is in your name and the electricity in someone else's? Do she owe on other bills?
I have a student DS and if he wasn't paying his share of the bills I would want to know, and would ensure payment was made.
I would say yes to telling the parents, if not the rest of the household will need to share the costs, you can't pay it all yourself
If she does default speak to the SU or welfare- there maybe a way of getting support for this situation especially if she drops out,

I would not have a problem with you contacting me if my DD was in this situation, I would want to know so I could help her (and you) I think you should do it.

billsbills · 03/03/2018 16:16

Well, one more message to her and the slightest hint I might contact her parents and she paid in under two minutes after ignoring me for days!

Cheers everyone!

What a cow she is.

Trilllllian · 03/03/2018 16:27

Good. I was going to say that being a guarantor means exactly that - you are huramteeing to pay their share if they can’t for any reason.

Glad it’s sorted OP

Lizzie48 · 03/03/2018 16:28

If her parents are guarantors then yes you should contact them. I would want to know in their place.

blueskyinmarch · 03/03/2018 16:30

Great result though!

GrannyGrissle · 03/03/2018 16:30

Booboobooboo84 has the best plan though maybe leave your bank details with Freeloading Fucker's Ma and Pa so you can be paid without any illness/snow excuses it's snow excuse you know. Sorry couldn't resist

Tistheseason17 · 03/03/2018 16:31

Nice outcome, @billsbills
Wink

BackforGood · 03/03/2018 16:32

Glad it is resolved, but, like all the other parents on here, I would hope you would have contacted me if my ds / dd had not paid their share, yes. It isn't fair for one of you to be subsidising another flatmate.

Leeds2 · 03/03/2018 16:32

Good!

abigailsnan · 03/03/2018 16:36

Ah well seeing that they are guarantors I would get them involved asap.

MichaelBendfaster · 03/03/2018 16:40

She's a coward! Hope it doesn't happen again. I suspect she'll have learned her lesson.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 03/03/2018 17:53

I would ! Say you ant get hold of her and wanted to check she was OK before resorting to small claims court Grin

Daisymay2 · 03/03/2018 18:12

Well done!

Glad it is sorted but keep an eye on her. You want your money every month, don't let her build up another debt.
