To be outraged at the size of this cake? (Light hearted)

My supermarket shop has just been delivered and includes this cake which supposedly serves six people. I am not a big eater but even I find that idea laughable. As you can see it is smaller than my (small) hand and my phone!
I weighed it (no weight indication on the packet for good reason) and it weighs 228g, so each 1/6th slice would be 38g. I guess if I had elves or borrowers coming over that would constitute a reasonable portion, but in the real world I think offering people a teeny weeny slice like that would get me a repuation as a right tightwad!
Luckily it's just me and DH this weekend so it will be fine for the two of us, but it just made me laugh.

That serves one in my eyes!

Shock

YANBU! That is a single portion of cake, or - AT A STRETCH - enough for two old ladies, you know, the kind that eat like birds. Bloody ludicrous to think that 38 grams of cake is a portion!

lidoshuffle · 03/03/2018 09:19

That is small by my standards! Blush 38g of cake - that's crumbs.

I'm always miffed at the size of ready meals, but when I look at the info of the packet its a third of an adult's daily requirements. I think we (well I, certainly) have portion distortion.

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 03/03/2018 09:21

Are you sure your phone and hand aren’t exceptionally large?!

Seriously though, that’s not even portion!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 03/03/2018 09:26

Surely that is in breach of the trade descriptions act. I’d be tempted to write to the supermarket pointing that out. You might receive a nice voucher in return

KitKat1985 · 03/03/2018 09:27

That's enough cake for maybe two people in my opinion!

Aprilmightmemynewname · 03/03/2018 09:28

Isn't that the sort of cake a mil would serve after a Sunday dinner for 6 (1 potato each sort of dinner)?

LoudBatPerson · 03/03/2018 09:29

That looks more like it would serve three tonne, or maybe four smallish children.

No way is that 6 adult portions.

LoudBatPerson · 03/03/2018 09:29

Three adults not tonnes Hmm

AutumnalTed · 03/03/2018 09:30

I watched my DP eat this exact cake like a burger the other day Grin

rothbury · 03/03/2018 09:32

I could down that in one Blush

Stmoritz · 03/03/2018 09:33

How much did it cost?!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 03/03/2018 09:34

I'd eat that in one mouthful...

PanannyPanoo · 03/03/2018 09:35

Ah nostalgic moment. Is that a frozen dairy cream sponge? We used to have those growing up. A quarter each for Sunday tea. In the 70's before portions were large.

My mum would cut a mars bar into slices so they would last the family a couple of days. She was not over generous with portions.
Enjoy your 38 g of cake!

CavoliRiscaldati · 03/03/2018 09:36

We do have portion distortion, I agree, but this is a 2 people cake!

fusushumi · 03/03/2018 09:55

I am frequently surprised when I pick cakes/desserts up in supermarkets that look as if they might be for 2 people but then discover they are supposedly for 6! It does have the effect of making me feel I eat far too much of that kind of thing and returning the item to the shelf, which is probably all to the good....

Fekko · 03/03/2018 09:56

I bet it came in a huge box! That would do me and DS (with custard).

firstbornforbread · 03/03/2018 09:57

Portions, or servings don't really mean what you would serve someone. I think since the traffic light colours system came into packaging showing red yellow or green per serving, the suggested servings have got smaller merely to fit under the treatwise warnings.

I'm sure I've seen packaging on a frozen chicken nuggets that said nutritional details per portion with a (2 nuggets) as a portion 🤨

When it comes to cake, a hand does seem like a favourable portion measurement Grin

CottonSock · 03/03/2018 09:57

I'm jealous your shopping got delivered (my massive shop cancelled).. but no way is that a cake for 6

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/03/2018 09:59

My local Asda sells cakes like this - nice enough but only just enough for an OK ish slice for four.
I notice in an old cook book that recipes for things like a Victoria sponge or e.g. a lemon meringue pie, give quantities for a 7 inch - i.e. barely 18 cm - cake tin or pie plate. Were people just less greedy, a lot more frugal, or what? Who can be bothered with all that faff for such a tiddly little result? Especially a LMP made from scratch!

I always do double for the sponge, and have been known to triple the LMP since I only ever make it when expecting guests, and Dh would be mortified if there wasn't enough for 2nd helpings.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 03/03/2018 10:02

6?
It would be mean for 4!
Ok for 2

(I could eat it on my own...)

CaMePlaitPas · 03/03/2018 10:03

That's a cake for one!

GrannyGrissle · 03/03/2018 10:03

That is a child's portion.

fusushumi · 03/03/2018 10:08

There was a thread yesterday about whether or not it is "normal" to eat a whole tub of ice-cream
