To remind people to bring their animals inside in this weather?

Just that really. I saw a thread a few weeks ago about this and I was astounded at how many people believed Dogs & Cats can't feel the cold?! Please don't be cruel. It's only Golden Retrievers & Alsations that don't feel quite as cold as we do. It was a Veterinary Surgeon who told me that a few years ago. Along with the fact that a 'Fur Coat' isn't sufficient for any animal in the winter. So it certainly won't be when it's this cold!!
Dogs & cats can still get Hypothermia and many do!!

One of our neighbours has a cat who is our in all weathers. My DH built him a shelter in the garden which he uses. In this freezing weather he's been coming into the house to sleep by the fire. I want to adopt him.

VetOnCall · 02/03/2018 20:07

That is not accurate; Goldies and German Shepherds are hardy enough but they don't possess any special antifreeze properties that other dog breeds don't have. There are breeds that have particular cold weather adaptations - Northern Breeds (Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute etc.) or herding/guard breeds that originated in cold countries (Tibetan Mastiff, Caucasian Ovcharka etc.).

NewImprovedNinja · 02/03/2018 20:18

My chickens normally kip in an Eglu coop but they've been sleeping in a box in the Porch during the last few nights and pottering in the Polytunnel during the day.

MrMeSeeks · 02/03/2018 20:20

Think if i tried to shove my bunnies outside they would not be impressed!
jarviscockatiel does her heater need adjusting?

Lloyd45 · 02/03/2018 20:23

My horse is out, he's fine, no shelter but has a good hedge tree cover, lots of hay to eat and troughs de-iced, it's amazing how well horses manage in cold temperatures, I find the hot weather for horses is worse

Lloyd45 · 02/03/2018 20:24

My dog doesn't want to come on, he's been outside all day, you call him in and he barks to go back out

@WickedLazy dog sleeps on our bed. No way am I spending even one minute lying there to see if it's warm enough, it's not for me. I keep trying to cover him with a blanket but all he does is roll around biting it and playing with it. Any suggestions and I am serious?

Chocolou · 02/03/2018 20:40

One of my cats is outside a lot and this weather is killing him being cooped up indoors. He was desperate for the loo yesterday but didn't want to go out. Until 4am this morning!!! I stayed up for 15 mins and he didn't come back so reluctantly went to bed. I couldn't sleep as I was worried so 5am I'm back up calling him in.

In he trots. God knows where he was but he didn't feel cold. So he must've hidden somewhere. Can't stand him being out but he won't use a litter tray.

Lalliella · 02/03/2018 20:44

Definitely bring them in. Then if you run out of food they’re easier to catch and eat 😂

BarbarianMum · 02/03/2018 20:46

Our tortoises came out of hibernation a couple of weeks back. They are currently spending their days basking by the fire, humping, scoffing a variety of salad leaves and roaming restlessly round the house longing to be outside (and for it to be spring, they have no use for snow).

Katyb1310 · 02/03/2018 20:48

We've brought our rabbit inside while it's really cold and he comes in every time it's windy or very cold. I can't think of him freezing out there.

OonaLoona2 · 02/03/2018 20:52

This drives me crazy.
We have a working springer who lives outside. She does of course have a well insulated kennel with a large sheltered run. She has clean dry bedding. She is walked and fed daily and has water always available.
She will not come inside. We have in the past tried to force her to stay in and she gets very distressed, panting and pacing and whining at the door to get back out.
We also have many other animals on our farm who don't get to curl up in front of the fire. They are equally cared for and given extra bedding and shelter to keep them comfortable in this weather.
I hate that people assume if you have an animal that lives outside you don't care for it and you should be reported to the rspca.

WickedLazy · 02/03/2018 20:59

My dog is the same mikeyssister. My cat understands blankets though, and lets me tuck her in. Until the dog tries to pounce on her.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 02/03/2018 21:00

MIL killed poor DH's hamster this way when he was a kid. She left it in a freezing outbuilding and wouldn't let it in the house because it smelled. Angry
I'd like to leave her in an outbuilding this week....

That did make me laugh Grin

StickThatInYourPipe · 02/03/2018 21:04

To be fair OonaLoona2 you have Just explained that your animals have suitable outside housing.

Not a dog chained to a pole like a house I used to drive past!

Obviously there will be exceptions, as in your case, but overall probably best to bring in animals from this cold!

jarviscockatiel · 02/03/2018 21:13

Oh, go on then, here she is. Grin
She's got another heat pad and we've moved her tank next to the radiator so she's nice and snug.

JustDanceAddict · 02/03/2018 21:24

My cat won’t go out anyway in this weather. She’s using her litter tray which is something she never does normally.

HandbagCrazy · 02/03/2018 21:47

I had to go into the garden and carry ddog 1 inside earlier 🙄 She loves the snow but she's old and gets cold very quickly. I called her but she looked at me like I was stupid and went back to diving into snow drifts Hmm

Ddog2 dug himself a snow hole and tried to go to sleep.

MILs horse (the eldest one who should be slowing down now) almost injured himself kicking his stable door because she closed the top half temporarily to stop the worst of the blizzard getting him while he ate yesterday, and today he's in the field (with a rug) but absolutely refusing to come in.

Animals are weird.

ohhereweareagain · 02/03/2018 22:39

So so grim people having small caged animals hamsters rabbits birds etc . I get upset when I go to pets at home to get my cat stuff as I see all the poor bastards ie rats guinea pigs destined to end up in a shed or small cage in ie a garden either ignored as kids have grown bored or being roughly man handled by unsupervised children . I used to volunteer at a rabbit sanctuary. They wouldn't let them be rehomed to children only adults as house rabbits with garden access plus they are sociable animals and shouldn't be alone. Seriously grim Sad

madein1995 · 03/03/2018 00:13

I feel sip sorry with poor animals out in this weather and so angry at the owners. My dog is a 7yr old Scottie with 0 common sense. Unlike most sensible dogs who refuse to go out, mine goes out in it, waggling her tail, barking, leaping in the snow and loving it. She does knock to be let in after a few minutes and after 5 mins we open the door anyway and call drag her in. Is hilarious watching her enjoying herself, with the snow half up her little legs, but she likes it. As soon as she's in she's wrapped in a towel much to her disdain and dried off. She then goes to the opposite side of the sofa and glares at you for having the cheek to dry her off. And 10 mins later She wants to go back out, and the whole ritual starts again

madein1995 · 03/03/2018 00:17

In a testament to how little she's left out for, she's rarely cold when she comes in. Not warm, but not cold either, and she snuggles to her blanket. If she is cold she gets her blanket put over her for warmth which she promptly kicks off

RebelRogue · 03/03/2018 00:28

Stupid cat wanted out two hours ago because he won't use his litter tray. Stupid cat also did his business and fucked off.
Stupid owner is still awake and shaking treats regularly to entice him back in.
Stupid cat.
