to ask why the M62 is shut?

Not as stupid a question as it sounds.

I am reading the local news page and can see it's shut. Can see footage of empty carrigeways (around junction 23) but no reason so to speak for it being closed.

I assume it's been shut because of safety for those travelling over Rishworth and to avoid more people being stranded.

I cant see that anyone is still stranded?

CuriousaboutSamphire I think I saw that fake footage too - driving on the left? Yes you can tell :)

scarletmonkey Snow drifting.... I know what you mean. Why didnt i realise? What a knob lol. I'm in HD3

Its pretty horrendous 4 floors up in my apartment. We can kind of see the M62 from us. So goodness me

Also, the deep laying snow on the sides of the carriageways is being constantly blown by the high winds so visibility is pretty much zero. This is also happening on more minor roads in the area. The boroughs of Oldham and Rochdale are some of the worst affected outside Scotland.

cjt110 · 02/03/2018 16:55

AnyFucker I havent seen anything about the pileup - likely buried way down on the Examiner's website.

YY to the A57 et al being closed. I used to live over in Glossop too!

I saw that "footage" on FB too. It was awful. But they were driving on the right!

HandbagKrabby · 02/03/2018 16:55

It was closed early yesterday eastbound due to cars getting stuck in the snow and then the highways agency vehicle that was trying to tug them out caught on fire. When it was cleared and fully reopened westbound a van overturned and it shut again on that side, eastbound was still shut. Then about tea time it shut from Milnrow to Huddersfield because of the wind and that is why it is shut now. 3500 cars at the worst were stuck - there’s still some hgvs but I assume that’s more because there’s nowhere for them to go - alternate routes are pretty impassable too.

The multi car pile up was on the M66 - which also shut yesterday but it’s ok now.

The weather stopping people going over the Pennines feels like something from a Victorian novel!

anyFucker Places like Delph are so beautiful but goodness, it must be so bad over there when it's like this.

niceandwarm my Uncle got married at Rishworth Lodge, well had the Reception anyway. It was probably around 35 years ago
It was our “go to” place for a posh meal.
I think it is flats now, you’re right
As for the M62, someone has just put drone footage on FB of it. It’s teally odd seeing it with no cars in at all. The winds on the bridge of Scammonden Dam made it too dangerous and I think a lorry actually went over there and blocked it for a while. They were using Lindley Moor road to stack Lorrie up and Ainley Top so the whole area was pretty bad

hubbabubbanightmare · 02/03/2018 16:56

Huge pile up and not safe for L and HGV's. My DB has was trapped for 16 hours :(

cjt110 · 02/03/2018 16:57

HandbagKrabby Almost enough to re-ignite the war of the roses?! Grin

hubbabubbanightmare · 02/03/2018 16:57

I live close by and he wanted to walk to us but wasn't allowed to abandon his vehicle. It's been hell.

AnyFucker · 02/03/2018 16:57

The M66 near Ramsbottom also had a major vehicle pile up.

It's been horrendous around here for the last 2-3 days.

cjt110 · 02/03/2018 16:58

Hoppinggreen You dont live far from me if I remember? It's going to be fun getting to Lindley tonight then via Ainley Top!

The Cold War of the Roses perhaps Grin

TattyCat · 02/03/2018 16:58

It's weird. A 16 car pile up and there's nothing on the Examiner's website, but I know it was on yesterday's tea-time news because my mother mentioned it whilst I was on the phone to her. Can't believe it's not even mentioned on national news...

vandrew4 · 02/03/2018 16:59

I'm in whitworth and very high up at the top of a hill. the wind yesterday was unbelievable,. Never known anything like it. I must admit, I'm surprised that so many people even attempted to drive the M62.
hubbabub how come your DB was trying it?

AnyFucker · 02/03/2018 16:59

Krabby, was there just the one pile up ? My mistake, if so. Bad enough though.

Niceandwarmandhot · 02/03/2018 17:00

Hopping - what a fab place for a wedding that must have been! My dad used to have an old book on motorways in his car (come to think of it, it was probably called an "atlas" 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️) that had pics of the motorways from the 70's. The M62 had about 3 cars on it!

I love it up there but I don't like driving on that stretch of motorway in bad weather. Esp with the number of high trucks swaying around in the wind. Definitely best it's closed at the moment.

brizzledrizzle · 02/03/2018 17:00

Because the local rescue services don't want to have to risk their lives when idiots drivers try to go through the snow drifts and high winds?

SealSong · 02/03/2018 17:00

Footage from ITV, explains why it is closed.

TattyCat · 02/03/2018 17:00

Scrub that - just seen it was the M66 apparently...

delilahbucket · 02/03/2018 17:01

There hasn't been a pile up on the m62! Yesterday there was a traffic officer car on fire on one side and an overturned van on the other. It just went downhill from there with the weather. It's a route I drive weekly and it is bad enough on a clear day with wind, let alone with the weather we've been having. It isn't safe to drive on there at the moment.

Hoppinggreen · 02/03/2018 17:02

Hi cjt . No idea what it’s like there now, sorry but reports from earlier said it was bloody awful .
hubba hope your DH gets home safe soon if he isn’t already
A few people I know who commute from Lancs didn’t even try and stayed in hotels or with friends, bet they’re glad they did now

AnyFucker · 02/03/2018 17:03

Sorry folks, I got it wrong about a pile up on M62.

PNGirl · 02/03/2018 17:04

My mum and dad's friends were driving from North Yorks to MCR airport last night (I'm from the Colne Valley originally). Said friends tried to do the parallel Diggle route but the winds, zero visibility and drifts made it impassable so they went back to mum and dad's for a cuppa. They ended up down the M1, M42 then M6 back up. I would imagine it's no better now.
