AIBU to think that if I heed a weather warning and stay at home, unpaid that the weather forecast should be accurate

I heeded the advice. It said it would snow heavily from 10am and to stay home. If I don't work I don't get paid. I stayed home. It hasn't snowed. I haven't been paid. I could easily have got to work and back.

Why the fuck do they do that?

Oh dear.

DGRossetti · 02/03/2018 12:03

Was there no option to set up a teleconference ?

Something like gotomeeting can set one up in 30 seconds from their website.

Or Skype ?

What does your companies Business Continuity Plan say ?

When we had bad weather back in 2010, I was able to set up our entire office for homeworking (I was IT manager) in 10 minutes from home. Everyone put a full days work in. But we'd already had a run through of "What ifs".

(We had a "What if there is a meteorite strike ?" in the plan).

🤦‍♀️

YearOfYouRemember · 02/03/2018 12:15

I've been thinking about a family who now have to plan their seven year olds funeral so can't get on board with complaining about work missed and money lost at all.

Believeitornot · 02/03/2018 12:17

YABU

It’s a forecast not an accurate prediction

Fruitcocktail6 · 02/03/2018 12:20

Just because it's not snowing doesn't mean it's safe to travel, particularly not for two hours

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 02/03/2018 12:22

Yes Year I can never understand how, in a country wide situation such as this weather event, some people seem to believe that they should not be inconvenienced. And if they are they're entitled to be angry with someone, no matter the bigger picture Hmm.

Kahlua4me · 02/03/2018 12:23

It is only a forecast. How would you feel if you had gone to the meeting and then been stuck on the roads overnight. The world will not stop just because people missed a few days work, unless you work in hospitals or emergency services that is.

Sadly, it is a drawback to being self employed, no work no pay, but has to be factored into your situation.

We run a business and staff have time off due to snow, a double whammy for us as will still pay them but no money earnt for 2 days. But that’s just how it is...

Weather forecasters would be delighted if they could accurately predict every days weather!

Flatpackjackie · 02/03/2018 12:24

Possibly the stupidest OP I've ever read, and that's really saying something!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 02/03/2018 12:27

Not angry. Just miffed.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 02/03/2018 12:27

You sound very self absorbed OP?

StripySocksAndDocs · 02/03/2018 12:29

OP, are you saying it didn't snow where you are now, nor where the meeting was two hours away from you, nor anywhere in between?

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 02/03/2018 12:30

If I sound self-absorbed it's because i'm stuck at home. With time to reflect Grin

"Possibly the stupidest OP I've ever read, and that's really saying something!"

Flatpackjackie if this is the stupidest post you've ever read then you can't have been on MN for very long. I've posted way stupider things than this before

A good friend of mine works for the met office. He was only texting me yesterday saying that they were going to do a false forecast just to mess with people* Hmm

Come on, Op - I know you are fed up and out of pocket, but some people are so much worse off with this weather. And it is only a prediction, it's not legal advice!

  • in case it's not crystal clear, he was doing no such thing!
NotACleverName · 02/03/2018 12:33

Michael Fish called, he wanted to tell you that it's impossible to be 100% correct with regards to weather forecasts 100% of the time.

StripySocksAndDocs · 02/03/2018 12:33

The met office do get letters of complaint. So it wouldn't be unusual if the OP did write one.

I've a funny feeling there was something about a legal case too (that's with Met Eirann). But I'm vague on that so will have to try recall!

Niceandwarmandhot · 02/03/2018 12:33

What, did someone try to sue them? I do hope so, please find it Grin

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 02/03/2018 12:35

OK. IABU.

GaucheCaviar · 02/03/2018 12:37

Why the fuck aren't you getting paid if you have a job that requires overnight travel to meetings?

StripySocksAndDocs · 02/03/2018 12:38

That's supposed to be Met Éireann. My phone keeps changing it to Eirann; which is an odd choice as I don't think it's a word.

Sutre · 02/03/2018 12:39

Most people don't take the weather forecast as sanscript. To cover themselves they err on the side of caution they're saying don't travel in my area but I've been all over the place and it's been fine.

Sashkin · 02/03/2018 12:41

(Goes off to do advanced search on OP)

Yep, fair point! Grin

ajandjjmum · 02/03/2018 12:45

Well if Michael Fish called, at least it proved there's an afterlife! Grin

Snowysky20009 · 02/03/2018 12:45

🤦‍♀️ffs, people really are that dense it seems......

Niceandwarmandhot · 02/03/2018 12:49

God, wouldn't you be gutted? A call from the afterlife, and it's not elvis, or JFK, or Marilyn, or a beloved family member - no, it's just Michael fish. I think I'd hope my line was engaged Grin

Hang on - I just googled after typing that - he's not dead??!! Confused
