is this even legal, I was willing to go into work, I can get there ok, work contacted me before I started to say we are shut, don't come in...so of course I didn't go, now I'm told I won't be paid for today

bloody hell!!

have been there years and years, part time but never had a contract and this hasn't happened before

what do I do? there's no hr dept, its just one person in charge, who seems to make it up as they go along.

If they close they have to pay you.

ilovesooty · 01/03/2018 20:03

Yes they have to pay you

And as a pp said, they are in breach of employment law if you have no contract.

hotcrossbunsandtea · 01/03/2018 20:06

If they close, they have to pay you.

Tippz · 01/03/2018 20:08

Fucking hell. Hmm

Not giving people regular (PAID) hours after THREE YEARS should be outlawed. (And zero hours contracts need banning too: you can't pay bills and rent/mortgage with a zero hours contract!)

What a pisstake. Some employers are a fucking disgrace, treating their employees like this. YANBU @ssd

I would look into the links and info given to you.

BewareOfDragons · 01/03/2018 20:14

I believe that no only do they have to pay you, they can NOT make you take it as a holiday day.

All kinds of newspapers published the rules again today because of employers like yours.

GnomeDePlume · 01/03/2018 20:17

What happens if someone is on a zero hours contract please?

ArchchancellorsHat · 01/03/2018 20:17

I'm temping just now and won't be paid ffs

bluepears · 01/03/2018 20:24

'What happens if someone is on a zero hours contract please?'
wont get paid

SlackPanther · 01/03/2018 20:40

OP, are there other people working there in the same boat?

Get together, gather your case from the info here, look through the newspaper coverage, out it all in a simple straightforward written statement and either all sign it or all meet with your employer.

TheLastSoala · 01/03/2018 21:06

Standard practice for an “as needed” retail contract is you won’t get paid and you have no rights to get paid if they send you home/ask you not to come in.

Sorry

ClumsyFool · 01/03/2018 21:14

It’s not necessarily as black and white as getting paid because they told you not to come in.
I was told not to go in for a shift as the event I was working was cancelled. I will be paid as will others who were doing their normal contracted hours. However, for those who would have been doing it as extra hours over and above their contract it will not be paid.

LemonysSnicket · 01/03/2018 21:24

No contract no case I would imagine ...
