Who WBU, and am I a CF?! (Driving related)

Ok picture this:

Roundabout exits onto a main road with two lanes. Two lanes continue for about three quarters of a mile then merge into one.

Left hand lane had a queue all the way up to maybe 100m from the roundabout, so I went down the right lane.

As I got to the front of the empty lane, I waited patiently to be let in and a man wound his window down and told me I should wait my turn (and also called me a fat bastard but that's not what the post is about, we can all agree that's a dick thing to say)

I thought that was the point of merge lanes - to stop one lane having a massive tailback and it's not like I pushed in, I was waiting for a gap!
Otherwise what's the point of two lanes...?

So was I BU?! What do you do?

Yes @dailyshite you're right - thankfully this time the queue hadn't quite reached the roundabout but it often does at rush hour, the next exit on the roundabout is for the motorway so it actually blocks a very busy exit - all while a lane sits empty due to politeness. The mind boggles!

You were waiting your turn. I'd have told him to fuck off, but there you go. YANBU.

You were using the road correctly but it’s obvious to me every day that most road users don’t know how this set up should be used. Some sort of public information film needs to be shown on tv to put this right as the congestion further back and the passive aggressive behaviour at the merging point are road safety hazards.

You were doing exactly the right thing and using the road in the way it is designed to be used. People that sit in a huge long queue and don't use both lanes then block people merging in turn safely piss me off hugely because they make the road and junction more dangerous.

My husband is a professional driver trainer, he said you used the road correctly and applauds your sense! There's a roundabout by us that's the same, people straddle the white line to stop people using the road correctly 🙄
