To ask what cookbook for a student

My niece will be 18 next week and along with the £ I thought I would buy a cookbook for her to take to uni in September.

She is a proficient cook so not a “how to cook” book but more excellent ideas for making things go a long way, cheaper ingredients, quick food....

I love cookbooks and think maybe apples for jam might be good (but as it’s cheap and second hand on amazon) I am looking for one other.

Thanks!!

When I left for uni my mum gave me her Delia Smith complete cookery course book. Over the years it's the one I will always go back to as the most reliable with the biggest range of different recipes, most of which can be done in a budget. I love it.

For budget meals I also love the hungry student cookbook and a girl called jack.

I love the hungry student cookbooks (there’s 3 of them I think) by Charlotte Pike. We use them a lot and got them a few years after being students. The cinnamon rolls are amazing as is the mac and cheese!

Great thanks. Hadn’t heard of them... since I was a student a good few years ago!! Wink

The Nosh for Students books by Joy May are very good. Practical recipes that won't break the bank. No fuss and all can be prepared with little more equipment than a mug and some basic cutlery. Available from Amazon.

I bought them for my DD1 a few years ago when she went to university. I must admit that I quite like them myself too, and I am 51!!

Hairy bikers are great and the recipes always work.

Tiny Budget Cooking by Limahl Asmall would fit the bill - it's about planning your weekly meals to be as cheap as possible across the week, using leftovers efficiently etc. I wish I had it as a student!

Confusedbeetle · 01/03/2018 17:32

Hairy Bikers and Jamie Oliver (new 5 ingredients)

Hoddykins · 01/03/2018 17:33

Sam Stern cookbooks are great for uni students!

I'd say something like 30 minute meals by Jamie Oliver too!

Topseyt · 01/03/2018 17:37

Ooh, I do like the Hairy Bikers. Always fun to watch.

switswoo81 · 01/03/2018 17:38

I like Jamie’s ministry of food. I know it’s old though

I got my DS a couple of those mentioned above, and Jack Monroe's first book, which he found he used a lot. It's got great ideas using really cheap ingredients and he gained a lot of confidence from it.

SlothMama · 01/03/2018 17:43

As a student I loved the NOSH for Students book easy, cheap recipes!

A girl called Jack - Jack Monroe
Great, easy cheap recipes

pontiouspilates · 01/03/2018 17:45

I really like Jack Monroe's books. Her first is 'A girl called Jack' and is full of tasty, cheap recipes. Her latest is more vegan orientated and is 'Cooking on a Bootstrap' some of Jack's recipes have become staples in our house.

River Cottage Veg Everyday? Recipes are cheap due to being vegetarian, but interesting. Or Love Your Leftovers.
