...about cold bathroom

LashingsOfHamAndGingerBeer · 01/03/2018 15:19

I rent and my bathroom has a heated towel rail but no other radiator or heating. Does anyone know if there is any legal obligation regarding domestic heating arrangements? The towel rail is great for towels but doesnt generate any real heat in the room and it is genuinely freezing in there. There used to be underfloor heating apparently but it got disabled before I moved in. Any advice?

That's the same as I've got and has been with all the flats I've rented. I've always thought they were freezing, I always leave the door open if no one is in there so the room next door can warm it up a bit

ineedamoreadultieradult · 01/03/2018 15:23

I don't know but our house is the same, bathroom stuck on the end of the single story kitchen extension. Flat roof, hardly any insulation, heated towel rail. It's bloody freezing!

sportyfool · 01/03/2018 15:26

My ensuite is like this in my very expensive new build 🙄.. can you not just get some thick slippers ?

SilverHairedCat · 01/03/2018 15:36

That's all I've ever had in a bathroom. Does it run off the boiler with the heating or is it separate? You need to keep it on for longer. Mats on the floor. Keep the door closed to keep the heat in. Don't hang towels on it, keep it clear.

pinkcardi · 01/03/2018 15:45

No radiators in any bathroom in our house, only heated towel rails (which in this case are pretty ineffective and are due an upgrade)

pedigreeRacer · 01/03/2018 15:48

"Does anyone know if there is any legal obligation regarding domestic heating arrangements?"

Yes. There aren't.

Buy a heater or re-able the underfloor heating.

rogermooresfifthwife · 01/03/2018 15:50

I've never had a bathroom with a radiator - ours is massive, cold and heated with a towel rail. Don't think you can blame the landlord for that one!

seven201 · 01/03/2018 15:50

We only have a towel rail and it heats it fine but it is quite big. I don't put towels on it when it's cold. You should leave the door open a little so heat from the next room gets in.

DragonsAndCakes · 01/03/2018 15:51

Maybe don’t cover the towel rail in towels so it can heat the room?

TheCatsMother44 · 01/03/2018 15:52

I've never known a bathroom to have a radiator in it. Either heated towel rails or my parents also have a little fan heater installed in their bathroom that's mounted above the door but they're the only people I know who have this.

PlanNumber · 01/03/2018 15:55

It's all we have in our bathroom too, but they do vary a lot in output. Our plumber told us we needed a large white one for the size because the chrome ones don't give out enough heat. Although it is nearly 20 years old now, so maybe modern ones are better.

DalekDalekDalek · 01/03/2018 15:58

As my DSis learned the hard way - rental properties don't actually have to have radiators.

Cue (after she moved in) "I've just realised what seemed odd about this flat - there are no radiators."

Water and electricity are legal obligations but heating isn't.

ginghamstarfish · 01/03/2018 15:59

Hate towel rails, they're crap in my experience, gather dust, get rusty/paint flakes off, not warm enough. Much prefer a proper radiator with a rail above it for drying towels on. I'm not a fan of overheated houses but for goodness' sake, the bathroom is surely the one room you do need to be warm!

MrsElf · 01/03/2018 16:06

We have a very small bathroom, and swapped a towel rail for the old radiator. I honestly have found the room warmer since.
That said, DH insists that towels should be hung on the side of the bath, not on the towel rail. He moves them as soon as he sees them drying on the towel rail, (which is a bit of a running battle). The rest of the house has radiators, which I often "insulate" with drying washing at this time of year, (mostly bloody "do not tumble" enormous dog beds) and is definitely colder. We keep the bathroom door shut at night, so it doesn't loose heat to the rest of the house, and it is toasty in the morning.
So, could the bathroom be better insulated? Or just take the towels off the rail overnight (if you shower in the morning, or vice versa) and see if that helps any? Also, the towel rail needs to be bled regularly to keep it at its most efficient. If that doesn't help, maybe just ask why the underfloor heating is no longer used? I think the early underfloor heating systems were often inefficient, but if you're paying the energy bills, I cant imagine the landlord will be too worried.

DuckBilledAardvark · 01/03/2018 16:15

Just having a heated towel rail in a bathroom is pretty standard. We do in our family bathroom and its lovely and warm. Put less towels on it if it's not heating the room. What are your windows like?

GeminiRising · 01/03/2018 16:17

We've got a small radiator in our bathroom but we made them put it in when we upgraded our central heating after we moved in to our house.

We just have a normal towel rail and the towels happily dry over that with the heating on in there.

TheFlis12345 · 01/03/2018 20:51

Neither bathroom in our flat has any form of heating, even a towel rail! Going for a pee at night isn't much fun in this weather!!

PoohBearsHole · 01/03/2018 20:55

Get a small oil heater and put in the door way. Works for us (draughty old house with only heated towel rail!)

legaladvicepls · 01/03/2018 20:56

Don't think you legally have to have any heating do You? I know my in laws don't have central heating at they rent. I dont know how they cope like!

I do get it though and I opted for a normal radiator in my bathroom!

You could ask ll to change it, shouldn't be too much hassle?

DalekDalekDalek · 01/03/2018 20:56

Get a small oil heater and put in the door way.

Check your tenancy agreement before doing that. They often ban using additional heaters.

SheepyFun · 01/03/2018 20:57

Unlike others, we've always had full radiators in our bathroom, and the bathrooms have never been big.

One thing we have done to improve the temperature is run a fan heater in the room before having a bath/shower with the door shut (taking it out before running any water). That helps, though you still wouldn't want a long bath!

PoohBearsHole · 01/03/2018 21:06

Check your agreement and if they do allow extras this is what we've used when the boiler packed up. We liked the fact they were not blow heaters (small children) and could easily be moved (so we move it when using bathroom and don't have it in there with us and bath/shower) it does take chill off the draft.

Get a small oil heater and put in the door way

Either that or a small fan heater/ ceramic heater/space heater/one of those dyson heaters - open the bathroom door and put the heater in the doorway pointing into the bathroom for a little while before you shower.

The Dimplex DXUC2B ceramic fan heater is Which Best Buy (score 76). It’s around £30 and easily hidable from landlords Wink

FluffyWuffy100 · 01/03/2018 21:32

My bathroom is really cold.

I’m kicking myself because I had a new bathroom put in last year and I didn’t put in UFH. Bad decision.

DollyMcDolly · 01/03/2018 21:42

Our bathroom is quite small and we have a radiator in our new build. Did as well at our last house but changed it for a towel rail as it looked better. All houses I’ve been in have had radiators in the bathrooms
