Frozen pipes-arguing with landlord

As you all know, it's very cold outside. As such our pipes have frozen and the building I live in is currently without water. I've messaged my landlord and she has said that it is the responsibility of the building owner-someone else entirely-not her, I don't have an issue with this as I understand the pipes are outside and as such she doesn't own them but when I asked if she could either call them or give me their details so I can call them she said she was too busy and at best would be able to give them to me tomorrow.

I'm working at home as I'm unable to get to work so have no choice but to sit here without water until it comes back on.

My question is, how long is it "reasonable" to go without water? And if she won't call the building owners or give me their details is it unreasonable of me to phone my letting agent and ask them to get involved?

Go to the letting agent. Water is a necessity not a luxury

ClaryFray · 01/03/2018 11:39

Go to the letting agent.

specialsubject · 01/03/2018 11:48

Warm water over the pipes.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/03/2018 11:51

Totally not U to call the letting agent right now, don't wait because it's going to get colder!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/03/2018 11:54

and DO NOT pour warm or hot water over the pipes; you may cause them to crack and then you'll really be up shit creek (and quite probably liable for the damage)Contact your letting agent and they changed the right person for the job

We have no heating and hot water at the moment due to a problem with frozen pipes. Our boiler is discharging water as well.

Our landlord said he will try and send someone today, but yesterday he told us someone would be here first thing in the morning...

alpineibex · 01/03/2018 11:55

I feel you OP !

CaMePlaitPas · 01/03/2018 12:05

I don't think it is ever reasonable to go without water unless you've had prior knowledge of works being carried out. Your landlord is being quite unreasonable with her "I'm too busy" attitude. Tell her you might be too busy next time your rent payment is due - that might get her off her arse to find you a number. Ugh - I hate arrogance.

specialsubject · 01/03/2018 12:25

hot water would indeed be stupid. Warm is the recommended method for unfreezing pipes. Obviously also needs the intelligence not to create an ice rink. Perhaps I am assuming too much of MN.

see other thread on condensate.

Get onto the letting agent, that's what they are for.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 01/03/2018 12:34

Is she too busy to take your rent money too?

We have no water on our street and haven't had since last night. Neighbour waited two hours on the phone to Thames Water and they came out at 3am, twiddled a pipe, it came on again for a few hours and now it's off again.

We are all owner occupiers. No plumbers are available to come out (I tried mine this morning as my washing machine also helpfully flooded this morning for separate reasons but also fundamentally caused by the frozen pipes).

So honestly, sometimes this is just life. She's not being helpful but then honestly there is very little that can be done for now. We went to the supermarket and got some bottled water. Had a shower at work. May have to stay with my mum tonight. Water is indeed a necessity but if the supply is disrupted you will have to find it elsewhere.

SillySallySingsSongs · 01/03/2018 13:03

Lots of plumbers etc are overwhelmed at the moment and are struggling to even get to vulnerable people

Whisky2014 · 01/03/2018 13:04

Actually you can pour hot water on outdoor pipes if they are metal.

DevilTree · 01/03/2018 13:12

Our plumber poured boiling water on our frozen pipes yesterday!
